As-Salamu Alaikum,

As far as I have ever learned there are no rakats before the fard of Maghrib. I have been on safari lately, a several masjids which I have visited had numerous individuals preforming two rakats after the Maghrib Azan was called. It must be something outside the Ahl Sunna wa Jaamat.

It is makrooh (disliked) to pray 2 rakats before the Maghrib salah according to the ahnaaf. That's why it is also disliked to have a long gap between the Maghrib azaan and salah, in which a person can offer 2 rakats.

However the salafi brothers do offer these 2 rakats, and we differ with them on this issue.

I heard that Sahabah prayed these Rakatain before Maghrib, but Rasulullah did not. And the latter never rebuked them for praying them either. Is this correct?

This is done by people from other madhhahib, like the maalikies, so it is from ahlus sunnah.
This is bound to happen when muslims from all over the world meet each other, the wisdom would be not to be too suspicious at every single difference.

In the early era, the Sahaabah used to read this Nafl Salaah, but during the latter time this was completely left out.

Narrated 'Abdullah Al-Muzni:

The Prophet said, "Pray before the Maghrib (compulsory) prayer." He (said it thrice) and in the third time, he said, "Whoever wants to offer it can do so." He said so because he did not like the people to take it as a tradition.

Narrated Marthad bin 'Abdullah Al-Yazani:

I went to 'Uqba bin 'Amir Al-Juhani and said, "Is it not surprising that Abi Tamim offers two Rakat before the Maghrib prayer?" 'Uqba said, "We used to do so in the life-time of Allah's Apostle." I asked him, "What prevents you from offering it now?" He replied, "Business."

There is no salat during sunset and sunrise.
The two rakat performed may be after Maghrib adhan are perhaps could be according to the other school of Jurisprudance. But the lamadhabist couldn't careless and would like to show their superiorty by offering salaat.

You make a great remark when stating that it could be according to another madhhab (and indeed it is). But why add this on the lamadhabist ?
We must try to avoid useless comments on each groups...it's helping none of us.

But this is the "Asahh" (correct opinion) in the Shafi'i School, that it is Mustahabb.
