Thanks for your advice. I agree with the resources. Culture shock shouldn`t be a major issue for me as I have quickly adapted towards my wife`s culture. I wear kurta/shalwar even when I head out to run errands. As far as security issue I have been able to blend in well due to my Hispanic figure but then again somehow there are people whom knows that I`m a foreigner without even hearing my accent.
I would definitely consider it. People generally discourage(correctly) by default, but in your particular situation it sound like a great idea to me.

Well, it's generally just so difficult for your average American. They end up coming back broken and disillusioned rather than getting any benefit. There are multiple issues:

1) Security- if you are too obviously American and you don't have friends/relatives to tell you where not to go, there is a real possibility of serious threat
2) Culture shock- it's not easy to adjust to living with hours of no electricity daily, possibility of no water, general dirt and pollution, the different behavior of the government, the different behavior of people, not being able to cross the street alive, not being able to drive a car, acrobatic feats necessary to ride a bus, etc. It's very different.
3) Illusions about Muslim country- people often go expecting to find the Sahaabas of Madinah in the marketplace and then they're depressed by the cheating, lying, open haraam, etc. in the society
4) Difficulty finding the people and areas of benefit- There are people of really, really great benefit, but they are the gems hidden in the mud of a country full of charlatans and deviant sects all peddling their wares to the unsuspecting visitor.

Actually, we recently had a visit in California of an American revert from the '70's who has been teaching in Karachi for 30 years and raised a family there:
Shaikh Hashim Ahmad

A former musician by profession, he grew up in Los Angeles California and spent his teenage years there during the 1960's, in pursuit of his musical career. During the same era the urge to acquire spiritual development and perfection continued to become more and more predominant until he realized that therein alone lay the secret of true success for man. He therefore left America in 1970 in pursuit of the true and pure path towards spiritual development and the real meaning and way of life as prescribed by the Creator of the universe in its original form. After extensive travel and search he finally accepted Islam in Ethiopia in the 1971.

He eventually entered Jamia Ummul Qura Makkah Al Mukarramah where he completed a Degree from the Faculty of Da'wah wa Usooluddeen with specialization in the Sciences of Quran and Hadith. He thereafter was deputed by Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Baz, Chief Mufti, Saudi Arabia, as a teacher to Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamiah, Binnori Town, Karachi.
He served at the Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamiah teaching various Islamic subjects in the Arabic medium from 1985-1992. From 1992 onward he taught at Madrasah Aisha Siddiqa for girls, Karachi, and later its branch: Madrasah Mariam.

In 1997 he began to develop a company known as Al Khair Creative Quality Ware, based on Islamic and professional excellence which specializes in €œBeneficial products aligned with a healthy, meaningful lifestyle€. The Al Khair business model has evolved into an entire Islamic business system known as €œthe Ubudiyyah Business Model. Hashim now heads a team comprising of Ulama and professionals who are involved in the R&D of the model and devotes a large portion of his time in further developing, presenting and sharing the UBM Model to the business community and others.
Presently, Hashim lectures and presents on Islamic related issues at diverse venues, along with directing €œAl Khair€ as the CEO of the company. He also facilitates educational and commercial organizations in assisting them in visioning, strategic planning and time management.

Allahu musta'aan. If thats teh case, why do brothers waste time bickering about salafis? Why not focus on repairing this country? This place sounds like it needs improvements in deen and dunya inshAllah. Its possible with some hardwork inshAllah and everyone has their role, tablighees can deal with lying and cheating, scientists can deal with the polutuion, islamic politicians can deal with the political issues etc. We as muslims have a duty to repair our muslim lands inshAllah. Everyone should pick a speciality, and devote their life to it inshAllah

You don't have to pull (or insert) your salafi hating propaganda in every other thread.... It's the mini branch of salafiya... the AH.. also involved in propagting the fitnah in that country... if reparing was that easy.. why don't you migrate there... instead of firing cannons from behind your PC...

I have other nations I plan to go to help fix. I never said it was easy, just taht it needs to be done inshAllah and the more people who work on it the better inshAllah. Imagine 50% of pakistans ppulation were working togetehr on islamic revival, science, politics, economy, engineering etc. Then 60%, then 70% etc

This movement has to start somehow

As was mentioned id struggle in pakistan so arab nations or turkey or south east asia are probabily easier for me to handle inshAllah but I plan on doing my bit to work on the muslim lands improvements inshAllah but first I need to prepare skills, education, wealth and otehr things inshAllah. thats why I work hard on engineering, arabic and other things inshAllah, in preparation for going to dar al islam to help rebuild from teh ruins

And I feel its highly relevant the whole salafi anti salafi thing, if we waste so much time on this when pakistan is as described, our priortise are messed up. Wallahi we can rebuild dar al islam from scratch if we all work hard, whether your an air craft engineer, tablighee, alim, minister, we all hav our role to play inshAllah but we need taht intention of building up teh muslim lands inshAllah. There doesnt seem to be much ambition or vision at the moment because we're too busy with otehr things

This is good advice. IA I plan on doing the same as well, if I get the opportunity. Not sure if it'll be Pakistan or another Muslim country.

I agree. I know Pakistan is far from perfect and it needs some serious repair. There is way too much bribing and corruption within the system. My fingers are crossed with hopes of the country stabilizing itself one day.

Repairing Pakistan is really difficult. Why ? Check these links.

Forget about nations, start with individuals.

Work on on ourselves, and the sectarian issues will be the furthest from our minds.

Then individuals influence families, then neigbourhoods, then communities, the cities and then nations.

Theres no need to rebuild from scratch , if you followed Ulema from rightly guided schools.

Where I live, you see teenibopers and their girlfriend and boyfriend meeting up in cafe. They hear the the adhan in Ramadhan time as well but do not rush to taraweeh salaat. The only difference they can not french kiss in public because of the law. the idea that some how being in a muslim state will be a deterant is a wishful thinking. It is up to the parents to instill good morals and values and sense of responsibilities. They do this by being engaged in religious ventures collectively with other muslims for common good cause and by attaching oneself to scholars of Tassawuf and Shariah. It is not about being strict but being wise parents.

People planning to migrate to other country is in my view not the best soluiton. They have responsibility to reflect Islam in best manner. By running away they deprive others of it. Perhaps they were born in the community to be a representative of Islam. They can reach out to others in a most effective way then others because of similarities. The key point is to find like minded muslim to build an interdependent local community that benefits the wider one visa vie Islam.
