Wa alaikum assalaam.

- One has to accept ones sins and feel guilty about it.
- Repent and have in mind not to repeat the sin.
- Keeping the above two in mind, Seek forgiveness from Allah by saying 'Astaghfirullah' (O Allah forgive me).

You can say Astaghfirullah as many times as you can. There is a hadith that even though our beloved Prophet Muhammad was free of sins he used to seek forgiveness (saying astaghfirullah) 70times daily.

Walaikum Assalam,

It is said that besides the spritual benefit of reciting Astaghfirullah, there is physical benefit of its recitation as it restores the chemical balance in human body.

I remember we had to do that in the Catholic Church, which I never really understood.

Bold above mean abundantly (thousands of time), not literally.

Once you follow the above advice, inshaAllah, Allah (swt) will forgive you. Don't go back to that sin again, however, if Nafs and Shaytaan make you do it again, repeat the above process again sincerely. Its said that once a forgiveness is asked seriously, its always accepted by Allah (swt), but Shaytaan will whisper in you hearts that maybe you are not forgiven, just ignore the whispering of Shaytaan and strive to do good deeds with passion.

Praying 2 rakah salat al-Tawbah is a good way to repent.

The most important thing is sincerity, you have to sincerely repent for the sins and feel bad about them.

You say it the way Mishary says it in this nasheed version of Hadith Qudsi.
