This has been a really hot topic recently. From what i can gather (I listen to Turkish lectures from many different Scholars):

- Sheikh Nazim and Abdulkerim Efendi (his only murid worth listening to) seem to think he is alive today. They belive he will appear at a place called Qadem (an old ottoman railway station). Also, according to a dialogue with Cubbeli Ahmet Hoca, somebody named Selim will be the Sultan of the Turks to hand the reigns over to him (possibly a grandson of Sultan Abdulhamid whos true identity is hidden). Also, Hajj this year will supposedly be a major one that occurs every 7 years according to them. So if he doesn't appear this one, it's another 7 year wait for next chance.

Nazim also mentioned something about the two Abdullahs (I'm not sure what he's refering to as he's a bit vague about it).

- Cubbeli Ahmet Hoca seems to think he will not appear this century due to the first 28 or 30 years already being passed without his appearance (he quotes Imam Rabbani).

- Another Imam from the Ismailaga cemaat, Dr. Mehmet Talu Hoca, seems to think he will live to see the Mahdi. He quotes a dream he saw and some positive reaction from Mahmut Efendi.

- Surprisingly the Nur Cemmat (the followers of Said Nursi) seem to think he will appear quite soon. The evidence they cite is this:

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi states in his Risale:

Thus, unfair people who do not know this truth say: “Why did the Companions of the Prophet with their vigilant hearts and keen sight, who had been taught all the details of the hereafter, suppose a fact that would occur one thousand four hundred years later to be close to their century, as though their ideas had deviated a thousand years from the truth?” (The Words, 24th Word, 3rd Branch, pg.354)

Furthermore, they state that when Cubbeli Ahmet Hoca stated that 30 years have passed this century, he has made an error in Ijtihaad. In the prophets time, they didin't use the hijri calender. Since the prophethood was given in the year 611 and we are currently in the 2012, so that would be the year 1401.

Imam Rabbani states in his Maktubat (volume 1 page 611) that the coming of the Mahdi will be in the second thousand.

Just throwing some information out there. Not sure what it's worth, but it's hot amongst the sufis.

Also, in his lecture series regarding the Mahdi, Cubbeli Ahmet Hoca refers to somethings i can't seem to find a source for. He speaks about Rumiye and Kati. If anybody can clarify in this matter, it'll be much appreciated.
