Brothers ![]() As far as Surah Al-Fatihah is considered then there are three (3) differences of opinions:
The evidence for first opinion is listed. ![]() |

![]() And the first opinion is Hanafi's (I think second is Shafi'i's, and third Maliki's, wa Allahu a'lam). So it's all down to what madhhab you follow. |

![]() The third opinion is that of Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal (RA) and also perhaps wrongly ascribed to Imam Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Shaybānī (RA) ![]() |

Sallam ![]() Islam is learned from Ulamah (experts) just like a Doctor needs to be visited when a person is ill and doesn't matter how much information is available on google. So I recommend that you stay in touch with Scholars & Ulamah. In the meantime if you choose to follow the opinion of Hanafi Ulamah then Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah is not to be recited. Here are the details. http://www.central-mosque.com/fiqh/salahman.htm oh I thought the third one was the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa (ra). ![]() I may be wrong but don't think so. |

Salaam,
Ok whilst on this subject can I confirm a few things this is going to make me sound like a layman but alahmdulillah if it clarifies matters then that is good. If someone could answer the question one by one by putting correct or incorrect next to each one of the bullet points I have made, not only will it help me but others who are looking at this thread and if we are making mistakes in salaah then imagine the reward for correcting someone. If you put incorrect next to the question kindly put the correct. Answers from a Hanafi point of view please. - When you read your 2 sunnahs you read Fatiha and a surah from Quran in each rakaat. - When you read 2 rakaats fardh on your own you read Fatiha and surah from Quran in each rakaats. - When you read 2 Rakaats in Jamaat you stay silent when Fatiha is read and when the surah is read (e.g Fajr) this is in both rakaats. - When you read your 4 sunnahs you read Fatiha and a surah from Quran in the first 2 rakaats and then for the 3/4 rakaats you read Fatiha only - is this correct or do you read 2 more surahs for the 3/4th rakaat. - When you read 4 fardh on your own you read Fatiha and a surah from Quran in the first 2 rakaats and then for the 3/4 rakaats you read Fatiha only - is this correct or do you read 2 more surahs for the 3/4th rakaat. - When you read 4 Fardh in Jamaat (Zuhr & Asr) You stay silent behind the Imam for the first 2 rakaats and then in the 34d and 4th you recite Fatiha only. - When you read 4 Fardh in Jamaat (Isha) you stay silent for first 2 rakaats when fatha and surah is read and then in the 3rd and 4th you recite Fatiha only. - When you read 3 fardh (Maghrib) on your own you recite Fatiha in and a surah in the first 2 rakaats and in the 3rd rakaat its Fatiha only. - When you read 3 Fardh (Maghrib) in Jamaat you stay silent for the first 2 rakaats and only read Fatiha in the 3rd Rakaat. Jazakallah khayr for your patience with me my brothers. |

The one praying alone or the Imam of the congregational Salah should now recite some Qur’aan in the following Rakaats of Salah after Surah Al-Fatihah:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatada (RA): My father (RA) said, "The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in Zuhr prayers used to recite Al-Fatiha along with two other Suras in the first two Rakat: a long one in the first Rak'a and a shorter (Sura) in the second, and at times the verses were audible. In the 'Asr prayer the Prophet used to recite Al-Fatiha and two more Suras in the first two Rakat and used to prolong the first Rak'a. And he used to prolong the first Rak'a of the Fajr prayer and shorten the second." [Bukhari] Amir Al-Shabi (RA) narrated that Umar (RA) wrote to Shurayh (RA) asking him to read Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the first two Rakaats, and Al-Fatihah only in the last two Rakaats. [Ibn Abi Shaybah] Ibrahim Nakhai (RA) said, “Do not add anything to Al-Fatihah in the last two Rakaats. Imam Muhammad (RA) said, “This is the opinion of Abu Haneefa (RA) and we adhere to it. [Kitabul Athar] Note: It is my intention to post some of the available Sunnah on what Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) recited in each Salah separately, Insha’Allah. |

Sorry to sound like a complete layman but just for clarity can you answer point by point above and correct what needs to be corrected. |

- When you read your 4 sunnahs you read Fatiha and a surah from Quran in the first 2 rakaats and then for the 3/4 rakaats you read Fatiha only - is this correct or do you read 2 more surahs for the 3/4th rakaat. You can read Surah Al-Fatihah and a Surah in each of the 4 Rakaat. Im just wondering if the bold part is a must? if so does it have to be 4 different surahs in the salah? or can you repeat what you read in the first 2 rakaats? Also you answered it by saying you can read which makes me think it is not a must, if it is not a must is it just fatiha in the 3rd and 4th surah? |
