Default Will my fasting count?
Asalamualaikum brothers and sisters,

I woke up early on this summer day at a little after 6 AM because my mom had a flat tire that i needed to help her with. She was waiting at a gas station and when I got there I bought a juice and drank it not being fully aware that today is actually Thursday (I usually fast mondays and thursdays). My question is, at that point I had no intention of fasting really but it was because I was still groggy from my sleep and wasn't even aware that it was Thursday (no work and school for a month tends to lead to this), and as of right now I haven't eaten since so will my fasting today be counted or should I just eat?

Thank you

The Basics of Fasting (Shaf'i School)

  • Nullifier #1: A substance reaching the body cavity through an open orifice (substance: this excludes mere traces such as mere taste or smell without any actual substance; body cavity: like the stomach, throat, head, and inside of the ear; open orifice: like the mouth, nose, ear, and anus)
    • If one deliberately and willingly allows food, drink, or anything else (even if inedible) into the body cavity through one of the aforementioned orifices, and one knew that this was unlawful, one’s fast is nullified. If one does this forgetfully, under coercion, or in ignorance of its unlawfulness, one’s fast is not thereby nullified.

Please get this double-checked with someone who has more knowledge of the Shaf'ae Fiqh.

Yes but it wasn't like i was thinking "I am going to fast tomorrow" it was more of "oh tomorrow is thursday so i will be fasting" if you understand what I am saying.

for shafi'e, there are 2 arkaan (pillars?) of fasting, ie
1- Niat (making intention) of sawm/fasting
2- Guard oneself from the things that invalidates the sawm/fasting.

One the Niat, there's 2 situations:
- for fardh fasting (ie Ramadhan) and other obligatory (wajib) fasting (eg nazar, kaffarah), the intention must be made on the night before the time of fajr.
- for nafl fasting (voluntary), it is NOT conditioned that the niat/intention must be made on the night before fasting. It is permissible to make the intention during the day time PROVIDED that the sun has not passed noon AND HAVE NOT done things that invalidates the fasting such as eating/drinking etc.

wallaahu a'lam.
