Default Understanding of Islamic Medical Treatment
I thought of opening a threat to discuss Tibb al-Islami (Islamic Medical Treatment) that hopefully we can benefit from the discussion.

Basically Tibb al-Islami is a branch of Islamic knowledge and is an effort to cure disease(s), sickness using methods that is/are in accordance to alQuran & asSunnah and the ijtihad of asSolafussoleh. The disease or sickness can be physically or spiritually. And the treatment is not confined to only on humans, but to a much wider including animals, plants/trees, buildings, roads, bridges etc.

Physical illness includes fever, cancer, paralysis etc...
Spiritual/mental illness includes illness afflicted by jinns, hasad (jealousy), uncontrolable rage/anger, etc.

Various physical and spiritual illness can be cured using Islamic treatment. The method includes using certain du'as (taken from alQur'an, alHadith and the practices of the Salafussoleh). Aside from du'as, using ingredients (eg water, honey, sidr leaves, etc) that are halal can also be used in treating the illness.

The Holy Prophet s.a.w. said (riwayah from Usamah bin Syarik r.a.)
تداووا عباد الله، فإن الله سبحانه لم يضع داء إلا وضع معه شفاء إلا الهرم
Get treatment o slave of ALLAH, for ALLAH s.w.t. did not create illness except was created together its cure, except old age.
- ibn Majah

Hence we muslims should not feel despair when afflicted by any disease/illness.

Rasulullah s.a.w. method of treatment (ie treating patient with illness)

1- Rasulullah s.a.w. himself treat the patient that came to see him.
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w., from riwayah of Jabir Ibn Abdullah r.a.
"Ubay bin Ka'ab was shot with an arrow on his arm in Ahzab battle, Rasulullah s.a.w. place a hot iron (to treat the wound)"
- HR Muslim

2- Rasulullah s.a.w. asks the patient to seek treatment through taking "medicine"
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Abu Sa'id alKhudri r.a.
A man came to Rasulullah s.a.w. and said; "My brother is experiencing pain in his stomach"
Rasulullah s.a.w. said; "Give him honey to drink"
Then the person came for the 2nd time, Rasulullah s.a.w. said; "Give him honey to drink"
Then the person came for the third time, Rasulullah s.a.w. said; "Give him honey to drink"
Then he came again and said; "I have done that" (ie the illness has not cured)
Rasulullah s.a.w. said; "ALLAH is the truth, and your brother's stomach is lying, give him honey to drink"
And he was given (again) honey to drink and was cured.
- HR Bukhari

3- Rasulullah s.a.w. did not treat the patient. On the other hand, teaches the patient to treat himself with certain method and recitation of some ruqyah
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from 'Uthman bin Abu al-'As as-Saqafi r.a.
Verily he ('Uthman bin Abu al-'As as-Saqafi r.a.) complained to Rasulullah s.a.w. about his illness of his body since before his embracing Islam.
Rasulullah s.a.w. said to him; "Place your hand on where the pain is on your body and say "bismillaah" 3x and then recite 7x "a'uudzu billaahi wa qudratihi min syarri maa ajidu wa uhaadzir"
- HR Muslim

4- Rasulullah s.a.w. did not treat the patient. But tells to go and meet with another person who is skillful and a "specialist" in treating the illness at that time
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Jabir bin Abdullah r.a.
"Rasulullah s.a.w. once sent a tabib (doctor/physician) to Ubay ibn Ka'ab r.a. to cut (operate) his vein ('irqa) and a hot iron (at that time) was used"
- HR Muslim

5- Rasulullah s.a.w. visit a patient but ask another sahabi to treat and give medicine to the patient
From hadith riwayat Abu Nu'aim (hadith #1920, Ma'rifah al-Sahabah) where Hadzrat Sa'ad r.a. fell sick and Rasulullah s.a.w. asked Hadzrat alHarith ibn Kaldah asSaqafi r.a. to treat and give hadzrat Sa'ad medicine.

6- Rasulullah s.a.w. was treated with ruqyah by Hadzrat Jibril a.s. who was sent by ALLAH s.w.t.
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Abu Sa'id alKhudri r.a. that Jibril a.s. came to Rasulullah s.a.w. and asked; "Ya Muhammad, are you sick?"
Rasulullah s.a.w. replied; "Yes"
Jibril a.s. said (ie recited ruqyah upon Rasulullah s.a.w.); "Bismillaahi arqeeka, min kulli shay-in yu'dzeeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw 'ainin haasidin, Allaahu yashfeeka, bismillaahi arqeeka"
- HR Muslim (hadith #5700)

7- Rasulullah s.a.w. was treated by Hadzrat Aisyah r.a.ha according to method taught by the Rasulullah s.a.w.
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Aisyah r.a.ha;
"Usually when anyone of us is sick, Rasulullah s.a.w. would make "masah" (wipe) with his right hand and recite;
Adzhibil ba'sa, rabban naas, washfe antash shaafee laa shifaa'a illaa shifaa'uka, shifaa-an laa yughaadiru saqaman

When Rasulullah s.a.w. was ill and became more serious (chronic), I hold his hand to perform just as he (s.a.w.) would normally do, but Rasulullah s.a.w. pulled his hand from mine, and recited;
Allaahummagh firlee waj'allee ma'a ar-rafeeqi al-a'laa"
- HR Muslim (hadith #5707)

9- Rasulullah s.a.w. give guidance in treating patient afflicted with al-'Ain illness with water surplus from wudhu or bath from the the person that is the source of the illness
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Ibn 'Abbas r.a.huma;

If there is anything that is able to overtake taqdeer, verily disease from the wicked deed of al-'Ain will overtake. If you (the person that is the source of the al-'Ain disease) are asked to bathe (for the purpose of treating patient afflicted with al-'Ain), go and take the bath."
- hadith Muslim, Kitab al-Salam, hadith #5702

10- Rasulullah s.a.w. approves treatment with alfatihah as ruqyah onto a person stung by scorpion
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Abu Sa'id alKhudri r.a.
"Verily several person from the sahabah Rasulullah s.a.w. were in a journey. They went to an Arab village and had hoped that the villager will accept them as guests but the villagers did not accept them.
However, a person inquired from them; "Is there among you a "raqi" ? (hal fee kum raaqin?) for our head of village has been stung"
One of the sahabah r.a. replied; "Yes, there is"
And he met with the head of the village and recited ruqyah onto him with fatihatil Kitab (ie surah alFatihah) and the village head was cured.
The sahabi r.a. was given several goats but he declined accepting it and said; I will relate this to Nabi s.a.w. and he went to see Nabi s.a.w.and related the incident.
He said; "O Rasulullah, By ALLAH! I didnot ruqyah anything except only with surah alFatihah.
Rasulullah s.a.w. smiled and said; "How did you know that it (ie surah alFatihah) is a ruqyah?"
and he s.a.w. continued saying; "Accept (the gift) from them and get me one portion with you."
- Hadith Muslim, hadith #5733

11- Rasulullah s.a.w. forbid using as medicine or stuffs that are from haram things/ingredients.
Hadith Rasulullah s.a.w. from Abu Darda' r.a.

The family of Amr ibn Hazm went to see Rasulullah s.a.w. and said; "O Rasulullah s.a.w., we have with us ruqyah that can be recited to treat scorpion stings, whereas you have forbidden upon us ruqyah?"
They recited the ruqyah to Nabi s.a.w. (to acertain if it is forbidden).
Nabi s.a.w. said; "I do not see any problem. Whoever among you is able to be of benefit to his brother, he has to do so"
- hadith Muslim, hadith #5731

13- Rasulullah s.a.w. give permission taking payment from ruqyah of alQur'an.

Q - Is it permissible to take payment for treating patient with ruqyah ?

Yes, it is permissible.

Dalil 1:

Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 71 :: Hadith 632

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

Some of the companions of the Prophet came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet ), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful)." When they asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me."

Dalil 2:

Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 71 :: Hadith 633

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

Some of the companions of the Prophet passed by some people staying at a place where there was water, and one of those people had been stung by a scorpion. A man from those staying near the water, came and said to the companions of the Prophet, "Is there anyone among you who can do Ruqya as near the water there is a person who has been stung by a scorpion." So one of the Prophet's companions went to him and recited Surat-al-Fatiha for a sheep as his fees. The patient got cured and the man brought the sheep to his companions who disliked that and said, "You have taken wages for reciting Allah's Book." When they arrived at Medina, they said, ' O Allah's Apostle! (This person) has taken wages for reciting Allah's Book" On that Allah's Apostle said, "You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book."

Q - Why do some Islamic healers ask for the patient's name and his/her mother's name ? Is is permissible ?

A - Yes, it is permissible.

Dalil:

"Al-Humaydi r.a. reported that Fatimah r.a.ha went to see Rasulullah s.a.w. complaining of toothache. Rasulullah s.a.w. inserted his right index finger and placed on the aching tooth and recited
hence her pain palliated."

- Hadith by Syeikh Muhammad ibn Yusof as-Salihi as-Syami (942H), in his kitab "Subul alHuda wa laRayad fi Sirah Khayr al'Ibad".

Rasulullah s.a.w. made du'a/ruqyah and mentioning "Fatimah bint Khadijah" ... Hence, this hadith is a dalil (proof) that it is permissible to mention the name of the patient and bin/or bint his/her mother when treating a patient.

Wallaahu a'lam.

Q: Why do Islamic healers use water ?

A: Using water in treating illness is permissible in Islam. In fact some mu'allij (a person who treats with Islamic medical sciences) use water as the main ingredient in treating patients (apart from ruqyah)

ALLAH swt says,

He sent down upon you from the sky, water (rain) by which to purify you and remove from you the evil of syaitan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.

the word "ليطهركم" (to purify/clean you) comes from the root word "طهارة" and "طهور" that our Nabi s.a.w. had used in one hadith, from Ibn 'Abbas r.a.huma

ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم دخل على رجلٍ يعوده فقال لا بأس طهور إن شاء اللهVerily Rasulullah s.a.w.visited a sahabi who was sick, and he (s.a.w.) said; Dont worry, it will be cured insya ALLAH
- hadith Bukhori, Kitab al-Marda, hadith #5662

This demonstrate clearly the usage of water (rain water specifically mentioned here) in curing/healing/treating problems related to syaitan and heal the soul (heart).
