Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah
that's a difficult question brother, can you tell us more about the old lady, her religion, what she likes, is she liberal or conservative, old fashioned or modern etc? Don't give her a translation of the meanings of the Holy Qur'an straight away as it may be too concentrated for her as yet. Give her something that tells her the basics of Islam in a nice gentle way. Harun Yahya has written several books on basic Islamic subjects that are good for this. remember that if she comes to Islam through your help it is a blessing both for you and her so be thoughtful and patient about this situation, show her the beautiful nature of Islam and focus on the most important thing - that there is only one God and we call Him Allah, but He has many other beautiful names to and we call Him He but really He is far beyond being male or female - Be very very gentle and considerate with your dawa as potential Muslims can be frightened and put off by some careless comment that you haven't even realized would have any effect upon them. Put yourself in her shoes so that you can know what to say and what not to say - there is no need to teach her everything about Islam straight away - just the important and beautiful ones if she continue to show interest. |

السلام عليكم
I would recommend 'The Story of The Quran' by Ingrid Mattson and Muslim Way of life translated by Abdulhakim , The Creed of Imam Tahawi by Hamza Yusuf and of course something on the Seerah. Edit: and obviously try and find a good translation of The Quran make that the priority as brother TS wrote. |

Even I would recommend the Tahawiyya. The brother can download it and print it directly without giving the Hamza Yusuf version which is quite costly.
In India, it is available for close to Rs.2000/- and has only 168 pages. I think that the 'Road to Mecca" by Muhammad Asad also makes for good and interesting reading. ![]() |

Salam Aleykum, Once she understands the basics of Islam, then you can give her a good translation of the Qur'an, with commentary and explanations if possible. |

I dont think thats a good idea. She wont understand the Qur'an at all, as it is tied with the seerah and was revealed because of specific events from the Prophets (pbuh) life. So I would recommend you give her a book about the seerah, and also a book about the Qur'an, rather than the Qur'an itself. |

Despite having indicated that she does not believe there is a god (naudhubillah), she stated her interest in learning about Islam. I don't see how you could start with anything but the message itself - the Qur'an. If Allah (SWT) wills, He will guide her. So I agree that Qur'an and Seerah are best. She can look up events in a Seerah book for context. The Seerah book might also help develop love for Rasulullah (saw). If anything, I think the actions of Muslims around her would sway her against - not the Qur'an and the exemplary life of Rasulullah (saw)... so bear in mind that she is even reading your actions brother!

Whenever someone asks to read or know about Islam, the automatic answer should be Quran, rather than some book written by man. Who can explain his religion better the creator or some puney human? I'd go with God. salam saqqib |

I'm surprised at this, Allah's last book to his people just isn't good enough for some. There's a better chance for that person to convert to Islam if he/she actually understands the Qur'an. Quran and Seerah at the same time, it's a tried and tested formula bro, ask the converts, they convert mainly because of the Quran nothing else, obviously none of them would understand the whole thing but it wouldn't stop them from understanding the basic message of Islam. Keep in mind that not every person who reads the Qur'an (especially a crude English translation) is going to instantly fall into sujood and proclaim the shahadah and recognize the Qur'an for the miracle that it is. Yes it does happen in some cases, but there are a lot more cases where the Qur'an has had no effect on the non-Muslim reader, and may have even made them more aggressive towards the deen. This happens because they have very little knowledge of Islam. This is exactly what critics of Islam do. "wife-beating", "100 lashes" and "kill them wherever you see them" verses are all perfect examples of this. Do you think the people who make these claims actually understand the Qur'an at all, even after having read it fully. No, they dont, otherwise they would not be making such false claims against Islam. |

Selections from the Qur'an might be better than the entire Qur'an which might turn out to be heavy reading for the lady particularly since we do not know exactly how committed she is right now. Gun fights all night but Alhamdulillah we're safe in Allah's (swt) protection. |
