I'm 16 and have been given a job by Asda to become a supervisor (I don't wish to carry on with school) but the job requires me to sell people alcohol and also stock and order it to for the supermarket is this wrong? If so could you tell me, I haven't told me parents about me being accepted due to this reason. If it's wrong I'll carry on with school.

Why are you dropping out of school and compromising your future for a job at a supermarket? Anyway, selling alcohol is completely haraam. "When Allaah forbids a thing, He forbids its price (buying/selling)." (Musnad Ahmad) Anas ibn Malik narrated, "Rasoolullah cursed ten people in connection with wine: the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought." (Tirmidhi) |

I guess once cant work in any kind of supermarket or shop with alcohol? at some point you will need to handle it one way or another .. not to mention the wages your getting from the supermarket is haraam due to the alcohol. So how is that any different to any other big place that deals with interest but the employees dont necessarily know how the company operates?

consult with your local scholar please, just dont take a hadith and interpret it to your scenario, doesnt matter how clear it sounds. there are many departments in the supermarket and you should make it clear that you will not be comfortable working in the Alcohol aisles and maybe you will be able to come to some terms with your employee and just swap the duty of working in the Alcohol aisles with a non muslim.

please do not confuse with working as cashier that is involved in selling khamr and other employers such as janitor, those working in other department that do not have any dealing with khamr and others. taking into consideration your statement .. my question now is .. can one work in a supermarket(not handle or sell alcohol) but the wage you recieve has some earnings from this alcohol? |

a cashier would 'handle' alcohol if a consumer purchased it when they are scanning it?? A janitor may also have to handle it or may have to clean a broken bottle of alcohol? Similarly, a person working as grape picker in a grape farm, but the owner of the grape farm sells the grape to a winery... the grape picker is also NOT included in the above 10 categories of acursed people. ie... it is not haram (not a sin) to work as grape picker even though the owner of the grape farm sells the grapes to a winery). However, people who have taqwa will avoid this... Please refer to a qualified alim in your area for further explaination. wallaahu a'lam. |
