al-Salamu 'Aleykum,
A few quotes from this article (you can find the main link at the bottom). Israel Miracles Sought At Tombs Of Sages These believers are part of a growing phenomenon in Israel, where hundreds of thousands of people from starkly different backgrounds flock to the tombs of ancient Biblical figures or modern-day rabbis, seeking blessings and claiming they've witnessed miracles. "Coming here is being able to speak to God's secretary. It's the closest you can get," said Suzy Shaked, a 55-year-old teacher from central Israel who visited the tomb of Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, one of the most popular pilgrimage sites. Shaked said she sees Abuhatzeira, better known as the Baba Sali, as God's envoy. A visit to his tomb puts her requests in God's earshot. She was praying at the Baba Sali's tomb for her son to marry. "It's hard for (people) to be satisfied with prayer in a synagogue to a God who is very abstract, who is unclear, who is not accessible," said Doron Bar, a historical geographer who studies the sites. "I think visiting a grave like this gives believers a line through which demands can be made." aoa, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph%27s_Tomb The Torah provides four details regarding the traditions surrounding Joseph’s remains. The account in Genesis relates that, before his death, he had his brothers swear they would carry his bones out of Egypt to Canaan.[22] He is then said to have been embalmed then placed in a coffin in Egypt. [23] In Exodus,[24] we are told that Moses fulfilled the pledge by taking Joseph's bones with him when he left Egypt. In Joshua, Joseph’s bones are said to have been brought from Egypt by the Children of Israel[25] and interred in Shechem. The bones of Joseph, which the Children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, were buried in Shechem in a parcel of land Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of silver (qeśîṭâ).[26] The Bible does not identify a specific site in Shechem where his bones were laid to rest. So the Jews believe that Yusuf was reburied somewhere in Palestine, although not certain where exactly. How the grave in Nablus came to be thought as the tomb of Yusuf, is anyone's guess. The Wikipedia article says three possible places for the Tomb of Yusuf (as), according the Jews' own traditions: Nablus, Hebron and Safed. But most people seem to think it's the one in Nablus. As for what Muslims are doing at a tomb with an unknown occupant... |
