Default Is this shaykh Sunni or Salafi?
As-salamu 'alaykum,

Does anyone here know if the Egyptian TV personality "Shaykh Mahmoud al-Misri" from Iqraa TV is a Sunni or a Salafi?

He doesn't quote "Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyya" in every other sentence, so it's a bit hard to tell...

They are Sunni in the general sense, meaning "not Shi'a", but so were the Mu'tazila and Jahmiyya.

In the specific sense of being part of the Saved Sect, Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama'a, then according to the vast majority of Sunni 'ulama they (the Salafis) are not, as they are Anthropomorphists.

I am a former salafi and salafis are not ahlus sunnah wal jama'ah. If they were sunnis, they would follow the sunnah and follow a madhab. They are muslims but deviants

A pantheist is a Mushrik and a Perrenialist is at best a deviant, so they can't be Sufis in reality. Sufis are Sunni Muslims. Just because someone claims to be something doesn't mean they are what they claim.

Same thing with the Salafis. I was one myself for 4 years and I live in a city with a lot of different Salafi groups. I have yet to encounter a true Athari among them. They all ascribe to the 'aqida of Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn al-Qayyim, and Ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab.

Here is a relevant fatwa:

http://www.islam.tc/ask-imam/view.php?q=11948

Please clarify whether the Imaams of Masjid-e-Haraam (Shuraim & Sudais) belong to Ahle Sunnah wal Jamaat. Which fiqh do they follow?

Answer 11948 2004-06-22

The Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, that are found today, are made up of two groups viz. the Ashaa'irah and the Maatudridiyyah. The wahabis are classified as Ahlul Bidah and out of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah. (Al-Muhannad Pg.46).

In order to ascertain whether the Imams of the Haram are Wahabis or not, it will be necessary to enquire from them. It is not possible to pass a ruling without asking the person himself, unless he openly declares being a wahabi and not from the Ashaa'irah or Maaturidiyyah. As for their fiqh, some claim that they are ghair-muqallids while others say they are Hambalis. Here too, it will be necessary to enquire directly from them

I think it's basically that Salafi's say 'Allah says yad which means hand but His Hand is not like our hand' whereas an athari says 'Allah says yad and we leave the meaning to Him'

So athari aqeedah is the most basic of aqeedah's I think, and will be the Aqeedah a layman should adopt when he doesn't understand something i.e. leave the meaning to Allah

It would be wonderful if you could give me a link that shows proofs for the difference.
