Default He who knows himself knows his Lord
I believe this saying is from Al-Ghazali[RA] and I have always wondered...what do it really mean???

'He who knows himself knows His Lord'

JazakAllah kyran for responses.

from the pathetic knowledge that i have, to understand this, you have to first surrender. surrender to Allah's will. and accepting whatever that befalls you.
find yourself a teacher or shaykh and follow his teachings with love. let love be everything you see and do.

and when you lose the desire to want and know what this line means, then you will know what it really means. i'll just post a poem of the great Mansur Al-Hallaj who knew the reality of this line for you to think about.

"I am He Whom I love, and He Whom I love is I.
We are two spirits dwelling in one body.
If you see me, you see Him;
And if you see Him, you see us both."

Allah knows best...

To surrender to Allah's will..or when Allah's will become our will.

And Allah knows best.

I think Dr76 was addressing secretofrose.

My two cents about OP.

I think it is a Hadith that he who knows his self he knows God. But I stand corrected by knowledgeable people.

The meaning is that after looking at Taj Mahal you know a lot about its architect and builder. After looking at Large Hadron Collider you know a lot about the scientists and engineers behind it. Similarly man is best of the creatures. If you know yourself then you know what kind of Being is that who created you.

This is a very good point and you may be right on with this observation..and Allah knows best.

Very succinct brother Khalid.
It is like bulb switching on.
A servent knows his position and ignorant individual knows little or does n't know anything and suffers from arrogance and delusion. In essense he is deprived of mercy of Allah and is far from the most Sublime and the most Perfect.
May Allah (SWT) save us from this foolishness.
