Default Vacation in a casino allowed? Visiting Vegas, Atlantic City, etc...

There are Muslims who think going for vacation to places like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno Nevada, etc, is allowed and fine; as long as they are not gambling/drinking or involved with any of the other forbidden things which go on there. In other words, they think they're just going there to stay in the hotel (usually a casino hotel, sometimes a separate hotel but right in the middle of all the casinos), enjoy the "scenery", go out and have a good time with the family doing "halal" activities.

These Muslims are under the impression that going to such places with your family under the above-mentioned conditions is completely fine. I am looking for relevant ahadith/ayat/fatwas which disprove this illusion which they are under.

I did Google but didn't come across much which would resonate with this type of thinking (it needs to be something which sends a "direct hit"). Insha'Allah you brothers and sisters can help out.

(unless of course, I am completely wrong and it is in fact fine to visit such places given that you're not going to engage in the haram activities going on there? I doubt it).

Allah knows best.

"I would like to ask about the ruling on going to nightclubs for a spot of fun; just to dance and socialize, but not to drink alcohol or to take other drugs. Is this allowed for Mulsims?
Answered by
Sheikh Salman al-Oadah
A Muslim may not go to these places. In fact, he is not allowed to have anything to do with them. He is not even allowed, as part of his work, to assist in building these places or to install any utilities in them. Allah says: “Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancor.” [Sûrah al-Mâ’idah: 2]

Also, it is forbidden to mix with members of the opposite sex and to listen and dance to music. What lawful activities could a Muslim possibly engage in while attending such places?"

There was a similar question at askimam.org. Basically it stated it was not allowed for Muslims to stay in a hotel with a casino, unless there are no other hotels available.

To anyone who may be looking for similar information, the following FATWA on Islamweb is very helpful as well Insha'Allah. It talks about visiting certain types of countries for tourism, not what I specifically asked in my OP, but same exact concept.

Aside from religious issue - why would you want all those casino crazed and drunkard people around you? You will continuously run into them. Not a good choice for vacation spot even from worldly perspective.

Absolutely correct brother, I don't disagree with you one bit.

However, if you read my post, I said things like:

"Muslims who think it's allowed"
"...are under the impression"
"...this illusion which they are under"
etc

We're not even talking "bad" Muslims per se (by today's standards anyway, Astaghfirullah). We're talking "regular" people who're honestly (in their mind) just trying to go somewhere "nice" for vacation with their family and enjoy the "halal" activities available (or activities which, again, they think are 'halal'). Obviously they are very much deceived, which is why I was asking for what I was asking for in my OP ("I am looking for relevant ahadith/ayat/fatwas which disprove this illusion which they are under. I did Google but didn't come across much which would resonate with this type of thinking (it needs to be something which sends a "direct hit")").

To this type of people, if you say you're not going to a casino with them, they look at you like you're from another planet and give you the speech about "why? we're not going to gamble, we're just going there to hang out with our own people at a nice place".

Saying things like "why would you even wanna go to such a place, religious issues or not" doesn't work with these type of type (which, again, is the majority of the Muslim population today. Even many "pious" people honestly (again, in their mind) think it is fine to go to such places for vacation as long as "they" don't engage in any of the haram which is going on there).

It's a very serious issue and may Allah guide all of us ummatis of Muhammad and the entire mankind to what is right, and may He keep us away from what is against His commands. Ameen.

There is a limit to being nice and polite if people insist on taking you to haraam place you should be firm and say youre not going and if it gets too much then just break the friendship.

JazakAllah.

Yes, again, completely agree with you brother. Alhamdulillah, me being dragged to these places is not the issue. In fact, I don't have any friends left (lol). It sounds funny but Subhan'Allah it seems like these days one sign that someone has started trying to practice the deen is that they all of the sudden go from having 100 friends to none or barely a handful. Alhamdulillah, slowly but surely making some new ones at the Masjid and stuff.

What it comes down to is that only Allah can give hidayat. We can try to use hikmah to the best of our abilities and make plenty of dua, the rest is in the Kingdom of Allah . May He make all of us, our families and friends amongst the rightly guided. Ameen.
