Default Muslim freelancing online to generate income
What is Freelancing online?

Put simply, a freelancer online is a person who generates an income by carrying work that is digital.

A freelancer online provides some sort of service, here is a list of services that they will provide:

  • Digital Design - i.e. website design
  • Programming - coding in php, .net, .asp. ruby rails, etc
  • Graphic Design - logo, banner, images, etc
  • Data Entry - creation profiles on forums, .xls based jobs, etc
  • SEO - Search Engine Optimization
  • Social Media - monitor and contributing to facebook, twitter, youtube, etc
  • Virtual Assistance - A combination of the above for a fix period of time i.e. 8 hours week, 30 hours a month.

A freelancer has many clients rather than one steady employer. Freelancers online charge by the hour or project based. Since freelancing online is not considered labouring task you are essentially exchanging your skill-set for money.

Why freelancing for Muslims?

Muslims should have a seperate agenda to their counter-parts and their sole intention is the pleasure of Allah. Although working in a job can also be counted as ibadaah it has to considered at what price?

Muslim women should/do not have a preference to work in a modern working enivorment which conflicts with many moral values taught in the Sunni. The same can go for men however it is still a male dominated work force anywhere in the world and women are more subjegated then men.

Also the demands of modern working patterns take the toil on Muslims and they have very little time to commit to their deen or family.

Further the increase of cost of living demands a person stays in some kind of working enviroment whether they choose to like it or not and this again has a detrimental affect on the morale and spirtuality.

Freelancing for a Muslim attempts to find a way to work and earn at the convienience that you want to. But it is not all rosey and requires a person think smart and strategically before they embark on freelancing.

What is the priority before getting into freelancing and making money online?

Understanding which skill you want to build and learning it effectively enough to give you an edge.

I can tell you that 95% of the people who offer an online service are not maximising on the opportunity to offer efficient service. So the opportunity is to be half as good as the best but better then the rest and you will be on your way to making money.

Let me give you an example. There is a lady from India that writes articles for me. She charges $10 an article 300 - 500 word each + fees. There is a specific way that I have understood the articles need to be written and presented that I would be satisfied. All she did was listen to what I needed and consistently delivered. her workload from me currently stands at 20 - 25 articles a month generating her $250 a month. However if she continues to write in the manner and improves her writing to serve a western audience she could charge $30 - $40 an article upto a 1000 words.

What did she do that stuck out above the countless number of writers that I used over the years? she listened and did not make earning money her priority but the needs of the customer the priority. She had an issue that her PC broke and was not able to deliver for a few days. Did I care? Not enough to get upset since I know I have struck on a writer that is GOLD.

Is she Muslim? No! Unfortunately I have had many Muslim writers in the past and none have delivered like she does. Is her work better then others? Yes and no. i am willing to overlook some of the short comings since I see a consistent improvement and their is a transparency in her genuine intent to provide an outstanding service to me her client.

Would I offer the same work to a Muslim? Absolutely, but this is not about me offering the work to a Muslim this is about you becoming the freelancer that people want to work with and hold onto.

Haris Rehman developed the Quran App for the Android for me. He is a Hafiz of Quran which is great. But as a developer he has weaknesses and flaws, but he delivered and at a rate that was very good. I have gone back to him discussing other ideas and work. Is this how you will get treated if you become a freelancer? probably not. If you are lucky to get me who has a higher tolerance level than others then you will be lucky, but do not look at it like this.

You simple have to deliver an impeccible job. This does not mean you have to be the expert in a field, no! not at all. It means the task you take on has to delivered in the best possible way.

Take for example someone asking you to find 100 Muslim forums so they can promote they product. You could take this a little bit further and give them the number of members that forum has so they know how many people the are advertising to. You could check to see if you can self-promote in the signature so they can take the opportunity to promote their business through the signature. As long as these little extra things are not more time consuming then worth you can give that little extra.

Doing these extra will it gurantee me more work from this client? No! but in the online world you could right a small blog post later on about this experience how you over delivered and a potential client could read that and think what a great person who went out of their way for a client. Trust me when I tell you that this is a timeless act that will always give you extra kudos.

So the point is find out what it is you can learn and work towards mastering it whilst getting work for lower-end tasks for the skill.

You may consider mastering photoshop so you can do Graphic design. There are plenty of outstanding video tutorials that will help you master photoshop online. Whilst you are learning you could do really small jobs of creating logo's for $5 - $10 just to get some experience in freelancing and interacting. BUT prior to offering work you will learn the most fundamental rule EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE which I have attempted to outline above.

I will do an injustice to you if you do not make this your number one priorty. Trust me without it you will grind away and not see it coming off for you and you will end up working longer for menial money and no satisfaction at all. But if you learn to deliver outstandingly then you can build a good portfolio that can work towards gaining bigger revenue.....

to be continued

Facebook is CIA-Funded Data-Mining Project:

The prime question to ask is if Facebook is not being used for Intelligence agencies such as the CIA and Mossad? And, why is Chris Hughes on the guest list of the Bilderberg meeting of 2011? Do you really believe the boys from collage are not Zionists and tie themselves with the New World Order agenda considering the history of controversial changes that they were forced to withdraw and change because of public opinion.

Facebook’s first round of venture capital funding ($500,000) came from former Paypal CEO Peter Thiel. Author of anti-multicultural tome ‘The Diversity Myth’, he is also on the board of radical conservative group VanguardPAC. The second round of funding into Facebook ($12.7 million) came from venture capital firm Accel Partners. Its manager James Breyer was formerly chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, and served on the board with Gilman Louie, CEO of In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm established by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1999. brother,

- is there any plan to setup this for the sunniforum members? we should use this opportunity to hook up many talented Muslims from sunniforum and we can try to use dinar and dirham as the accepted currency. How to go about it? I can contact several people who are actively involve in promoting dinar and dirham as the currency for the Muslims and try to discuss on how to set it up online. We can plan for now and discuss what's the best way to plan for it, .

- secondly we should try to revive the method of the companions in trading. Maybe a few scholars can guide us on how Abu Bakr (RA) for example did his trading. And a few of the percentage can be channelled for a good Islam cause.

Yes an excellent post hijacked by .... shame really....
This thing can develop into something major.
Maybe the start point is to create some sort of a directory for freelancing opportunities InshaAllah. Muslim and Non Muslim.
I like to write fiction for example. So hook us up with companies / organisations who would try me out -or vice versa.

I like to write too, if it's a topic I know well...

But I don't want to write a student's thesis for him... it is said to be a rampant problem and many Iranians pay someone to do their thesis. The service is found on freelancing sites.

I don't mind coding to display graphically what a student has done, he might have developed a statistical formula but not know how to show on google maps.

1) Those who can edit english language kitaabs proficiently using openoffice

2) Those who can research and write on given topics

3) Those who can translate from arabic/urdu into english, french, dutch and spanish. Preferably this should be your first language and arabic/urdu should be a learned language

4) App developers who know how to develop apps for the ios, android etc

5) SEO experts

If anyone is qualified to do the above, kindly contact us via pm with your background etc so that we may put you on our list of freelancers to contact when there are new projects available.

I can help with item number 4. But I do have a suggestion if anyone is willing to consider. The ummah nowadays still do not have enough resources for children media. We don't have good Islamic cartoon that's engaging to the children. As a result, the children grow up being fed with the likes of Disney cartoons and so forth. I mention about this as a reply to brother EDIpub as brother EDIpub seems to work/operate a publishing house (content publisher).

I don't have an expertise to come out with a good content, but I can handle the technical animation stuffs. So I can't really be the person to start this idea.

But it's just a broad idea. Surely there are a lot more to discuss and mechanism to be setup if the idea is accepted, then it can move forward.

Example of a nice Islamic cartoon;

I have experienced this freelance kind of working strategy for few days, I'm a Software Developer and Trainer, having ~ 6 years of exp in Java/J2ee technologies, I've conducted few online batches for students in KSA, USA. Its a good way of some decent income, however we need to have proper channel through which we get linked to the audience. If someone initiates, this can lead to a platform for some freelancing stuff...

MashAllah excellent responses.
But please remove email addresses from posts otherwise you will incur infraction.

although some great ideas this thread is not about becoming an exchange market for work but opportunity for others to learn how to get into the freelance work especially Muslim women from home.

Please bear that in mind and not just for your own goals.

Assalaamualaikum, I do apologise, we will create a seperate thread for our own needs Insha'Allah, with regard to assisting Muslim women to work from home, this is something we are doing already Alhamdulillah and has been one of the primary reasons we risked starting this publishing company, we find many Muslim women here in South Africa, many of them who have studied Qur'an and kitaabs at Darul Uloom who either cannot get employment or want to stop working outside and do something at home.

In the past besides local ads (on radioislam.co.za for example) we have also used sites such as elance.com and getafreelancer.com to source freelancers. Those here who are looking for freelance work can register at these sites and submit proposals on projects. The sites are not muslim specific though and you would need to be selective in what work you take on, competition is also very stiff. You should emphasise your strengths and portfolio (if you have one) to stand a better chance at securing work.

Much freelance work can also be attained by networking on islamic forums such as these and also by listing yourself in muslim directories for whatever work you wish to do.

i used to freelance as a graphic designer and web designer, but as bad as this may sound i avoided working for most Muslims because from experience i found them to be quite unprofessional, unappreciative and indecisive.

They also don't seem to understand the value of freelance work and wish to have amazing stuff which is almost free. I found that non-muslims were much more appreciative and understand things such as branding and how important it is so they were much more professional about it and were willing to pay more too minus all the hassle

I am really sorry for your experience, unfortunately it is true that many muslim buyers display poor attitudes with regard to these matters including timely payment. I have found that being clear from the beginning about project goals, requirements and payment saves a lot of hassle for both parties. Checking the feedback for the buyer/provider is also important.

Salam Alaykum,

I do not know if this is the correct thread since most of what is being discussed is about IT, but as you know I have my website for Da'wah and I am getting more and more involved in learning about Islam in-depth and figuring out the wrong parts in the ideologies of other religions. So perhaps if anyone could contact me for any work (in a freelance mode) I will Insha Allah look into it and hopefully carry it out. (If anyone wishes they can contact me through the email on my site's homepage).
