Great reminder akhi Abu Hamza. This is a bitter pill that is desperately needed. To be pleasant we have to use very kind words many times - there is no other way because this is the demand of Akhlaaq. And then these kind words also have the possibility of creating or boosting vanity. It is necessary ill to use kind words but we also have to save ourselves from ujb. May Allah(SWT) protect all Muslims from this hideous disease. Ujb is extremely dangerous because in presence of ujb or vanity we just can not become aware of our shortcomings. The result is that we can neither prepare for our defense nor we can seek for a cure for our spiritual illnesses.

That (Turkish?) lady in your other thread has made the scary statement that a vane person lives a life of vanity and is never cured. Very devastating.

Hazrat Haji Imadullah Muhajir Makki (NM) once told Hazrat Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi (RA) that you are not reporting your spiritual status. Hazrat Gangohi(RA) wrote back that Hazrat what can I report - both praise and criticism have become the same for me. Haji Sahab(RA) showed this letter to another great Shaikh and said see what a grand stature has Rasheed Ahmed has reached.

Basically praise and criticism have the same effect on you. In case of praise you have to work very hard so that it does not go to your head. In case of criticism either you have to reform yourself - which is some work, or you have to bear the pain of being unjustly targeted. Either way it is work.

that lady in tha thread on vanity and narcissism is an American lady.
Some times I feel spiritually, critisism is less damaging and easier to face than praise especially for those who have successful dunyawi careers and wealth along with some zahiri manifestations of deen. Every one praises such a person-in the masjid, in the jamaat, in the office, in the family, in the home (probable exception is wife), in the neighbourhood , etc. Very dangerous. Unless such a person meets a Shaykh of Tasawwuf, it's very difficult for him to escape from ujb and takabbur. may Allah save us all.

Shaykh Zulfiqar AHmed D.B. said in one speech,"When some one praises us, we should think that actually he is not praising us rather he is praising the attribute of Sattari of Allah Ta'ala, because, due to the Sattari (covering) of Allah, our defects are hidden and so people are praising us!

A Shaikh told that you might have seen people praising people of Allah(SWT). And in response you might have seen them smiling and enjoying also. He said that in reality they are communicating to Allah(SWT) that O Allah he is actually praising you.

Praising a Man in front of him is like breaking his back...!

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet heard a man praise another man and he was using exaggeration in his praise of him.
The Prophet said, "You have destroyed *or broken * the man's back."
[Adab Al Mufrad Bukhari: 334]

Ibrahim at-Taymi reported that his father said, "We were sitting with 'Umar and one man praised another man to his face."
He said, "You have wounded the man. May Allah wound you."
[Adab Al Mufrad Bukhari: 335]

Zayd ibn Aslam reported that his father heard 'Umar state, "Praise is slaughter." The transmitter added, "He meant when it is accepted."
[Adab Al Mufrad Bukhari: 336]

subhanallah! remembering this will save us from possibility of unneccesarily doubting Ahlullah and depriving ourselves of their faiz.
