Default haram to click you have read terms and conditions when you haven't?
Many times on the internet such as when registering on a new forum, or installing some software etc. you are asked to read and agree to a long list of terms and conditions before the task can be completed. You can only proceed once you tick a tick box saying you have read and agreed to the terms and conditions. So my question is, is it haram to tick the checkbox when you haven't read the terms and conditions?

haram is a strong word...reminds me of a story...A friend of mine when he first bought the computer installed some microsoft application through a pirated CD ( he was 11-12 years old at that time)...He read through the entire terms and conditions which took him something like an hour, then he agreed to the term and conditions and after the procedure went to his mother all excited saying that he had entered into an agreement with Microsoft.....

Even though we don't read, I think we are prepared in the mind to agree all those terms and conditions whatever they are which is what they were asking for and so we click just next and proceed. So may be we will be excused iA. Sorry I may be bad in justifying. Allahu alam.

common people we dont have to read all of that.....the kuffar are hell bent on saving their own time and wasting ours...Start reading those terms and conditions and you will stop buying software after sometime (good move btw)....do you read all the traffic rules and recognize all the signs when you first take the car out to drive on the road.....as the sister said if you agree, then any clause (read or unread) will apply when the time comes so what's the worry.....

No one here is going to say whether it is haram or not because we are not scholars. I remember I read it one time and it basically forbade you to do things which a good user probably wouldn't do e.g. copying, distributing etc. So as long as you download or whatever to use it solely for the most obvious purpose then I think you won't violate any of their laws e.g. download a computer programmer to compile computer programs ONLY. If you are intending to use it for another basis then I guess you should read the terms and conditions. But this is from a dunya aspect. In terms of deen, then we're not scholars and ticking you have READ when you haven't may be lying or it just may be excused as long as you know what it reads.

JazakAllahu khairan for replying so quickly. I have to agree to terms and conditions to use my ipod, but since im underage i have to read the terms and conditions to my mom and shes not willing to listen to it because its very long (68 ipod pages) and my father works in and out of the country.
Can someone please with this, because even if i have to read the terms and conditions im must go through it with one of my parents.

I once heard an Alim (with sunniforum connections) say in a bayan that clicking on I Have Read The Terms and Conditions without actually reading the conditions is a form of lying. The topic of the bayan was lying in Islam. I never read the conditions of anything I install though. Sometimes I glance through it.

Be safe. Just skim read it. It really doesn't take that long and most of it is in easy to read format. Then tell your parents in a more simplified and general form in your own words.

What about charging mobile from college electric board. Most of the time I forget to recharge my mobile, most of the staff member if they forget to charge mobile ,they charge from college. One mobile charger is always kept in my department. Many times I tried to avoid but sometimes its urgent then I have to charge it.I know principal or management don't have problem with this but still sometimes thoughts comes in my mind I should ask them, but again thoughts comes to my mind it might sound funny and childish to them or they might think I am pretending to be innocent.

Be very careful about honesty. Always uphold an honest heart by the will of Allah. You will see that any form lying becomes a seriously hard task for you. If it says "I agree to the terms and conditions" then you don't have to read, you can agree (but if anything happens you can't hold them liable because you agreed to their terms). If it says that you agree, read, understand then have a quick skim read read - make sure know the outline of what is being said. Or go for another website or software where it doesn't specifiy that you have to read.

I heard somewhere that you shouldn't charge without permission in another person's premises. The charging causes some money to be lost from electricity expenses. So, it's always good to ask for permission, they may laugh at you but when you say "My deen teaches me this 100% honesty and I will never go against this." Then maybe you would have done great da'wah and you never know... : )
