6_120.jpg Surah An'am Ayat 120: Leave sin, open and secret. Verily, those who commit sin will get due recompense for that which they used to commit. Does this refer to zaahiri (outward sins committed by different parts of the body like zina of the eyes, slandering someone etc) and baatini (sins of the heart like pride, jealousy, ostentation)? Can someone knowledgeable elaborate please? |

I have heard Shaykh Kamaluddin give this meaning to the verse as you have written many times that Zahir is the outer (bodily) and Batin is the inner (sins of the heart). He also sometimes translates it as this "leave the outer" meaning "stop doing sin" and "leave the inner" meaning "stop desiring sin". |

You can hear the above from the audio "Leaving Sin - 1" on the following page which is discussed in the first 2 / 3 minutes: http://www.islamicspirituality.org/lectures/general Hazrat says the ayat has two meanings. The first is what was mentioned in the opening post The second meaning "leave doing sins outwardly, and leave wanting sin inwardly; this is what they call tazkiyah. Stop doing sin - level 1. stop wanting sin - level 2 to learn how to stop wanting sin, stop desiring, glorifying sin, idolising sin .... that is called tazkiyah" |
