Uh oh....I think you may have just opened up a can of worms here...did you see the other thread in the Arabic section? In any case, Tee says that ahmar was the word Arabs used to describe white people, so I guess according to him this nickname means she was white.

I think they've explained Humairaa as "Abyad Musharrab bil Humra" Which can mean that she was of a tanned color, Not extremely white like the europeans nor extremely black like some parts of Africa.

Still I'd rather read a confirmation from someone who has spent some time researching this, like step by step how he reached his conclusion.

Who?

Anyway, that's just what I remembered from Tee's thread. His understanding is that abyad when referring to complexion does not refer to white, but a dark brown color. But yeah, better to wait for clarification from himself.

That's what I have from volume 4 of Lisan al-'Arab at the moment:

قال علي ، عليه السلام ، ل عائشة ، رضي الله عنها : إياك أن تكونيها يا حميراء أي يا بيضاء . وفي الحديث : " ( خذوا شطر دينكم من الحميراء ) " يعني عائشة كان يقول لها أحيانا : يا حميراء ، تصغير الحمراء يريد البيضاء

When Tee wants, ahmar magically becomes a dark color, so he would most likely interpret this as another "proof" for Arabs being black.

From what I know Arabs described Persians and Romans as Ahmar. To be honest though, it could just be that she has a lighter tan, so not exactly white but "whiter" than everyone else... or just plain white anyway I await his answer if he still frequents this forum.
