Our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has said:


Whoever imitates a nation he is from amongst them. (Abu Dawood)

From this Hadeeth of the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam we learn that if a person imitates a nation then he will be classified as being from amongst them.

A person can comprehend how important it is after understanding this Hadeeth that who we choose as a role model and which group or community we imitate or which nation and which type of ideology we copy plays a very significant part in regards to our deeni and religious aspect of life.

If we were to choose an evil nation, as our role model and thereafter we begin to imitate them, then according to this Hadeeth we will be regarded as being from amongst them.

In another Hadeeth of the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam we learn that every person will be with that person on the day of Qiyaamah who he had love for (whilst in this world) so if we imitate a nation, then one of the reasons for our imitating and following this nation is because we have love for them, now if this is an evil nation and we have love for this nation then we will be with them on the day of Qiyaamah, and a person can imagine what situation an evil nation will be in on such a horrific day.

The commentators of Hadeeth have mentioned that all types of imitating are included in the meaning of this Hadeeth, be it in matters of clothing, eating and drinking or characteristics and behaviour, actions and ideology.

In all aspects we should follow and imitate the pious and righteous.

May Allah Ta’alaa grant us all the capability to follow the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam in all aspects of life. Aameen.
