Can someone explain why there are violent verses in the Quran? How can they be argued against people who use these verses to portray islam as violent? I know Islam is the most peaceful religion in the world. But countless people use these verses to support their argument that Islam is violent. How does one refute them?
What does this mean? Why has Allah commanded us to fight? There are several other verses telling us to not fight/harm others as well as many hadith that the Prophet has said to be peaceful. But these verses contradict those.. Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things." Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help." Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". Quran (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." |

Allaah has clarified everything. Islam doesn't mean always to be static. Jihad is obligatory when it is necessary. On the other hand creating unnecessary violence (fitna) is strictly prohibited and it is a great crime. You should read Tafsir, history of Rasulullaah and Sahabah to know about the real Islam. Non muslims will always try to find out flaws of Islam. So don't pay heed to them. |

The intentions of these kind of topics, I assure you, is not to make you question the word of Allah (The Almighty, Only one who should be worshipped) and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him); But they are to help clarify verses in the Quran in whch atheists and non-muslims may deem violent and use in their arguments. It is to help us gain abetter understanding of these verses so we can prove to non-muslims and atheists that each and every verse has been clarified in the Quran for a reason, and to help us spread islam in a positive manner by stopping people from looking at Islam in a negative view point. The only way for us to stand up for Islam and the word of God is by educating ourselves and learning about verses. There is no harm in seeking knowledge. Allah looks at peoples intentions . May Allah reward you. But be careful not to spread confusions among the average SF member who are trying to understand the basics . Maybe its a good idea not to post under general Islam threads if appropriate. |

Maybe I should have worded the topic differently. But I feel it is the personal duty of each and every muslim to educate themselves about verses in the Quran. So one day while your out on the street or somewhere and someone comes to you and questions you about certain verses in the Quran, you can easily refute them. Of course, most of their questions will come as a result of ignorance and a lack of misunderstanding and you can easily clarify for them. Should they not agree with you; then forget them as they are certainly misguided and will not believe you no matter what you say. But, you will be surprised at the great amount of people who are actually willing to seek knowledge and learn about Islam once you present to them logical arguements and the positive (which is the only side, there is no negative) side of Islam.
