and everyone:

Here is my personal list of resources that I either have, have access to or am looking to acquire:
[*]Qur’an: translated (I have Pickthall and Yusuf Ali translations)[*]Seerah: Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by Martin Lings[*]Fiqh: Nur al Idah (see: http://islamicvillage.me/2011/11/11/...-introduction/) - AND/OR - Ascent to Felicity[*]Aqidah: Creed of Imam Tahawi - AND/OR - Taleemul Haq (see: http://www.islamicbulletin.com/servi...ils.aspx?id=67)[*]Tafseer: (confused about this one but feel the need to delve deeper than the translation and short notes – I would like to see links to hadith, details on historical context etc. - so I hope to find a resource that is easy to access but not too difficult to grasp)[*]Hadith: (see: http://spl.qibla.com/hadith/S0001.aspx and http://quranexplorer.com/Hadith/English/Index.html)[*]Tajweed: (see: http://allahsquran.com/learn/#s111d14q1t0p1 and http://www.abouttajweed.com/ and http://www.tajweedinenglish.com/)

In addition to this list, I've been listening to various lectures online at http://www.hoor-al-ayn.com/lectures/hesham-al-awadi/ and other places.

In order to make sure I have the basics covered, I would welcome and appreciate constructive feedback on this list.

Regarding Tafseer, I would highly recommend Mariful Quran, it's 8 volumes however it's the best Tafseer available.

I am having the same problem . Its a jungle and for some who want to learn the foundations its very
hard to stay away from posts and views that might be harmful.

Google is you friend. I found it useful in fine tuning my search on SF. Here is some help on the tips and tricks

Like sampling any media source I decided just depending on SF is not right to get a good understanding . SF has its distinct bias and characteristic just as any.

Would appreciate reference to some other good sites to explore as well from you guys .

Proper Ilm and Amal about anything be it on Islam or anything else is often a painful process ,
tests you.

for the tips. Here's my latest log entry:

SF log2150: Went down another rabbit-hole today. Become utterly confused, retraced my steps back out after having spent nearly an hour slowly becoming more and more frustrated and realizing I was only 1/4 of the way through the 159 or so posts. My frustration was borne out of knowing deep down (without needing any proof) that a point was being hammered over and over again is right while at the same time completely understanding what the other viewpoint was desperately trying to get across... finally, after reading posts from some who were calling for 'order' I heeded their call and beamed myself back to the other side of the screen.

I want to know more but don't want to allow myself to become frustrated and get lost in the jungle. I will return daily to explore the area slowly in hopes... I'm not sure what my hope is, other than to gain a better understanding of what is going on.

If I survive and make it out the other end, I will post my thoughts (assuming the thread does not close by then). those of you who are like me, just learning, I would advise you to take bite-size chunks and to chew the words slowly and carefully and try not to judge (this is hard to do). A lot of wisdom there, definitely necessary - just not easy to digest all at once.

Read some books and watch some good lectures on Islam. That will help you understand more about Islam. In here the information is jumbled and there are a few people trying to propagate deviant opinions here too. Also sometimes a Mountain is made out of an anthill. Above all always we should always check our niyyah regularly, because it is dynamic. We have to be careful.

P.s. The best way to learn is definitely from a teacher.

brother. I am working on checking my niyyah, insha'Allah all else will fall into place. I do not have a teacher yet, unfortunately. I am still reading/learning about various possibilities. For now, SF is my community and my link to possible teachers.

aoa,

welcome to this forum firstly.

you will find a plethora of information here and very interesting people. make full use of both of them to acquire things to learn and read. do not waste your time in debates. quote from scholars as much as you can when you do wish to speak.in sha Allah

this forum should lead you to a teacher or an institute in sha Allah. it is certainly not a substitute to either.

ma'assalam

Well, the content I've been focusing on is serious for me and that's why I take it seriously. I am just learning and am indeed reading and listening to lectures outside of this forum however, where I currently live there is very limited 'community' so, for the time being, SF serves as a community. I should also stress that while it is a serious matter for me, I am not looking at it as a substitute for authentic sources or teachers.

Also, I feel this forum is actually more open than other communities (in that people are somewhat anonymous here and open up about a lot of things, irrespective of gender differences as some threads have proven) and that openness raises the level of responsibility for both the reader and those who post - don't you think?

It is strange how, as one absorbs knowledge, the landscape shifts.

The SF jungle of hidden information opens up to a beautiful meadow full of fragrant flowers and butterflies, only to close in and become a minefield of lurking danger (for untrained minds)!

Note/Reminder to self: remain vigilant and cautious and filter information as best you can... and can you please heed the advice and just remain silent sometimes? Insha'Allah.

a beautiful meadow full of fragrant flowers and butterflies In some places it stays as a beautiful meadow! *hint hint* Although with the occasional rather strong breeze.

In all seriousness, I understand what you mean. That's why whenever I get confused over some matter, I consult my shaykh.

2 separate threads in one day brought 2 very different items to my attention:

  1. A convert who is just happy to feel the embrace of the ummah and does not want to specify a sect; and
  2. A group who are supposed to be Muslim but deem anyone outside of their group are not truly Muslim.

I don't need to know more about either one of them. Just knowing that the sister who reverted to Islam has submitted to Allah, feels peace in her heart and feels the warmth and love of the ummah is enough for me to feel good and feel the "meadow full of fragrant flowers and butterflies." Just knowing that the other group refers to me and all Muslims as a "so called Muslim" is enough for me to recognize them as a mine in a minefield and to be cautious as I walk.

I feel the last 2 verses of Surah Fatiha offer a very fitting dua here:

6. Show us the straight way:
7. The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray. Ameen.

Yes Alhamdulillah!

[This is why I know I need some guidance...]

For now, I'll stick to reading the Qur'an, learning as much as I can about seerah and making decisions within those limits.

But, this is now how Islam work, nor it never worked like this.
Rather, it's a modern form of "DIY Islam".
I can understand it's "uneasy" if someone has been used to just form his own ideas in his mind through reading the translation of the Qur'an and the sirah (it happens so often), but simply, that's not the way in which has even worked.

I can also understand that the proper methodology of Islamic sciences may seem "complicated", but actually it's about competence and specialization: we're talking about our most precious thing here, and we need to "handle" it with the utmost care and most proper etiquette and caution.

Fiqh & 'aqa'id discussions should not be made public. All of this is not productive and laymen (THAT DON'T EVEN PRAY) need encouraging threads, not sophisticated or insulting threads. Mods please consider this if you want SF to be a light for the e-ummah.
