Assalamu alaikum,
My friend has done a quite a bit of research on the story of Dhul Qarnayn in order to refute the claims of a person who was attacking the the story in the Qur'an. It seems to me the person who was attacking the Qur'an, his claims were shown to be weak after this theory was put in front of him. I am just going to put below briefly what my friend is theorizing. If someone wants to read more about it he can go to the blog of the person who was attacking the Qur'an and read the comments below the article: Recently, I visited a blog entitled QuranSpotlight, and I found the most detailed research attacking the verses of Surah al-Kahf that narrate the travels of Dhul Qarnain. This research is done by an individual by the name of Martin Taverille. The link to the blog article is as follows: http://quranspotlight.wordpress.com/...unset-sunrise/ After reading through the article very carefully, I figured that there was an irrefutable explanation for these verses, and I believe it is as follows: The phrase “maghrib al-shams” literally means “disappearance of the sun”, while the phrase “matli’ al-shams” literally means “emergence of the sun”. It does not literally mean “setting” and “rising” in the sense of descending or ascending. English translators have used the words “setting” and “rising” to adhere to convention. A simple glance at Lane’s Lexicon will allow for a better understanding. That said, and after reading countless arguments against the Qur’an in this regard, it is my opinion that these verses describe his journey to the North Pole during the polar night. So he “reached the disappearance of the sun”, and he “found the sun disappearing in (or with, or at) a muddy spring”. Then he followed a way, travelling through the darkness of the polar night, till he finally reached the emergence of the sun (indicating that he had walked out of the darkness of the polar night). It says that he found the sun rising upon a people whom “We had provided no protection against it”. I believe that this is referring to the fact that these people were about to have months of continuous daylight (a phenomenon opposite to the polar night, known as the midnight sun). In another place in the Qur’an It says “We have provided the night as a covering”. Interested readers may refer to http://www.athropolis.com/sun-fr.htm to understand the periods of continuous night and continuous day. They can also refer to the video entitled Arctic Midnight Sun to get a better glimpse of what I am talking about. I have made comments at the bottom of the blog article, and if anyone is interested, I urge them to visit the blog. Again, the link is as follows: http://quranspotlight.wordpress.com/...unset-sunrise/ Jazakallah Khayr |
