"And never (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allaah and His Messenger, and died while they were Faasiqoon (rebellious, — disobedient to Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم)” [al-Tawbah 9:84].

"Imam Maalik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The Muslim should not wash his father if his father died as a disbeliever, or attend his funeral, or go down into his grave, unless he fears that he may be neglected, in which case he may bury him." End quote from al-Mudawwanah, 1/261

Could I get some clarification on this please? I read this as referring to carrying out Islamic funerals and prayers - yani, that we shouldn't treat the death of a kuffar as we do the death of a Muslim. Could someone (anyone) please provide some clarification?

for the link.

I still read this as referring to janazah prayers offered to Muslims. These ayahs speak about hypocrites in Islam and the prohibition on carrying out janazah prayers for them... but what about non-muslims where janazah salah and Muslim services are not offered?

I think hypocrites and kuffar fall under the same ruling.

About offering janazah salah, yes. But if you attend a non-muslim's funeral (where they don't pray janazah salah), just for the sake of those who are living (like the example at post #7) does this speak to that too or is there a different ayah or hadith that speaks specifically to this?

That would be taking part in a non-Islamic religious ritual, which is strictly prohibited.

Yes like brother umar has mentioned, it's prohibited.

I have read what Ulama said about visiting and consoling a deceased relative's family to maintain good relations and family bounds, even if they are non Muslim. Just so long as its not at the actual funeral.
