Default A poor slave in search of beneficial knowledge
Salaam Alaikum rahmat ta allah barakatu, my name is yahya and I currently live in the los angeles, area, I was wondering if anybody knew of any shuyukh, or ulama in the area who are sound in aqeedah, hadith, fiqh, arabic grammar, etc, who teach or offer even private lessons that I am prepaired to pay for. While learning islam on the internet is a valid option I always prefered to learn face to face so I can read a text, and be corrected when I make mistakes on the text at hand, and also I believe that having a teacher with you,if he is of good chracter that will insha allah rub off on you. I am not trying to bash anybody with this next part, but it seems as if ever place I have looked for sound ilm, that most places have been influetrated by the understanding of the religion how ibn tayimiyah, al albani, and muhammad ibn abdul wahab understood it, While I am not saying the way they understood it is wrong, I am saying they understood it in a way that I really would rather not understand it in. While united states, is a beautiful country, and has opertunties, and gives certain freedoms many of our own countries don't give. However while secular knowledge and provisions are lovely, and needed knowledge of deen is a very serious matter. Islam is the deen of balance, and I hope by me striving for balance this is not a bad thing. If I cannot find sound teachers, I may have to leave back to my lands of origin in west africa to sound teachers who are more or less in rural areas. If anybody knows of any in southern california or the surrounding areas please contact me insha allah.

Try www.qibla.com

They have courses in all those areas. Don't dismiss it because its online. I've done about 10 courses with them and I can honestly say the quality is higher than what you could get anywhere outside the muslim world, and even compared to secular studies ive done at universities, i still think the quality of knowledge i got from qibla was better. Especially in arabic grammar and aqida, the instructors, especially shk hamza karamali who is a genius mashallah, they are all excellent. In aqida they teach tahawiyya, jawhara at tawhid and sanusiyya, i especially appreciated these coming from a background in philosophy. Shk hamza addresses all the common atheistic arguments and goes through the rational proofs for Allah's existence, as part of explaining the text. It is really invaluable and gives you a strong intellectual foundation for your religoin. With the arabic program, it goes for 2 years. In the first year you learn the theory, then in the second year you learn grammatical analysis of hadiths. They go through the whole of riyadh as saliheen and analyse each hadith grammatically. It's brilliant. After that you can do courses on higher level grammar, poetry etc.

As for fiqh they teach the maqasid of imam nawai and reliance of the traveller in the shafii madhab. They also teach hanafi and maliki but I don't remember what texts they use. But it would take you around 1 and a half years to finish all of their texts on shafii. I think that is an ample amount for an average person. If necessary you could go to the muslim world and continue your studies, but studying fiqh like this you would have a firm foundation in prayer, purification, hajj, zakat, fasting, and ihsan, and personal conduct.

They also have units on hadith and quran. In the hadith ones they talk about the usul of hadith and refute the claims of orientalists and modernists about hadiths being weak, the same with the quran unit. They also do tafsir, history, tasawwuff, tajweed

Right now they don't have their units being offered displayed on the site but the next semester starts in a few weeks so they will have them all up there. They do around 40 different courses a semester.

Again I urge you not to dismiss it because it's online. The knowledge is excellent.

Jazakalk khairun, Barakallahu fiikum I appreciate this, as I said earlier while I have nothing against the aqeedah of ibn taymiyah, al abani, and others of this nature, I myself just don't want to be apart of this, I am for tassawuf, although ibn tayimiyah has said things praising this noble science, the people who follow his books, say quite to opposite about it. I know there is alot of biddah in what we call sufisim today, that don't belong in religion, But this is why one must study fiqh first, before even going into the science of tassawuf, Unfortunately it is a trend to call yourself a sufi, but do things contrary to what practioners of this noble art have done in the past. Insha allah I will check qibla out, but I ultimately think despite all the problems in my place of origin in west africa I will be returning, the ulama that are sound in aqeedah in knowledge are available every where, but the ones who understand that knowledge to a very high level. are few, and hardly heard of.
