i think br john is summing up pakistans madaaris from one meeting with whom i think is Mufti Rafi Usmani, which is unfair. i studied in a madrassah in pakistan and though i was an international student i nearly got kicked out for having a ssp sticker on the inside of a notebook. i ran around like a headless chicken for 4 days because my teacher took my name off the register. pakistans madaaris have 'zero tolerance' for joining islamic organisations let alone political. |

Indeed it must have been stressing. But there is a situation of helplessness. Any assertion on part of madaaris might spiral down quickly to Red Mosque type of debacle. Being a madarsa graduate you know that the moral element in the education there is present in its pristine form and even the slightest practical orientation is bound to take its own life because the chaos in the real life out side the seminary is so drastic vis-a-vis the inside teachings. I am not advocating any position - just trying to make sense of the situation around. The latest phase of madarsas started in an environment of haplessness. Akabir had participated in armed struggle against the British and were over matched by the British might. There was no option but to go for protecting the academic side at least. That is what they did |

Brother John patronizes music. It is strange for a Dar-ul-Uloom graduate. I saw this in a programme by Rageh Omar in which he covered brother John and we came to know that his radio programme has a Tappa department. Basically there is at least one one un-rounded corner in his personality. Of course we ourselves might be having more than that.

Whether Mufti Taqi Usmani or Rafi Usmani, it was quite disturbing to hear Shakyh John Butt when he described their alleged behaviour towards him, "the fact that I was English, the fact that I was coming from Afghanistan, he just didn't want to talk to me." A westerner coming to Pakistan via Afghanistan is not likely to sent good vibes to Hazrat Maulana Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab (DB). Most of the visitors with that kind of route have been taking that route to prove that how backward, unjust and foolish Muslims are. Our elders do not waste their precious time. I shall not allow this event to disturb my peace. From what little I know of brother John I love him for the sake of Allah(SWT) and he has had his unpleasant experiences as I have had mine. So there. It is nice of him that he has chosen to live amongst us. Wassalam |

I don't think it is right for Brother John to say that they didn't "want" to talk to him. We are told to have Husn ad-dhann - but what the Brother said in the video is far from it. It is really hard to believe he has a link to Deoband. |

We don't really know what context he's talking about based on that video anyway. |
