I'm a sophomore in high school and im trying my best to lower my gaze when walking through the halls and in class. It can be tough sometimes, especially in a western country (United States) in public high school.
Im doing my best, but there is just one thing im wondering about. You see, most of my teachers are female, some relatively young. It gets kind of hard to not look at them since they're standing right in front of the room, next to the board. Plus I have to pay attention to their lectures and everything. Is it permissible to not worry about lowering my gaze if its for learning purposes? |

Bismihee Ta'aala
Asalamualaikum. I actually have asked this question to a scholar and a couple of shuyukh. I was informed that you shouldn't even look at your teachers for learning purposes (that is if they are the opposite gender). I am in college in the U.S., and realize that it isn't necessary to look at your teacher. Look at the board and listen to what she has to say, but no need to look. If you need to talk to her look over her shoulder or above her head. This is what I do. I know that my teachers know that I am not looking at them, but they don't really mind. I actually had this discussion last week with one of my teachers. She said that she understands that I am not allowed to look at women and doesn't mind at all. They may not agree, but they will respect you. Be strong. |
