What is the Islamic ruling on this, let's say if there is a class action lawsuit (against a large corporation regarding a certain 'treatment' of some employees, and you are included in this group), a settlement is awarded to all the plaintiffs, and one has a chance to claim his/her portion of this settlement (can be anywhere from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars).

Would it be considered halal to claim and receive this money or should one forego it?
