I usually go on too youtube and listen too Surah Yasin or Surah Mulk..this is good because I can read the english translation alongside listening to the Surahs.. also it benefits me more as I understand what I am listening too.I usually sit down on the floor with my laptop and facing the Kabah Shareef and listen to the Surahs in respect of the Beautiful Recitation of the Quran Paak (most pure).
My question is... Isit allowed or what are the rulings on .. the ways in which you can listen to the Quraan Paak.. can I play recitations whilst eating breakfast or walking to school etc through my ear phones. Please forgive me as I mean no disrespect, just trying to get some answers in order to make things a little easier. Jazak'Allah |

brother, This is in no way a scholarly opinion but I have done a little bit of research on this issue so what I'm about to tell you is merely my personal opinion based on the very little knowledge and experience I have. It is amazingly virtuous to listen to the recitation of the Qur'an, Insha'Allah. It comes in a hadith (paraphrasing) that once the Prophet asked one of his companions to recite the Qur'an to him . The companion said something like "how can I recite the Qur'an to you when you are the messenger of Allah and it was revealed to you?", and the Prophet said something like "I like to hear it being recited". Then when the companion recited the Qur'an and lifted his head after finishing, he saw that the Prophet had tears in his eyes. I have read that based on this type of ahadith we can see how virtuous it is not only to recite the Qur'an yourself but also to listen to its' recitation. Subhan'Allah. That being said, utmost care should be taken when listening to Qur'an recitation, just as is taken when reciting it yourself. Insha'Allah sitting on the floor, facing the Ka'abah, or being in a state of wudu is not necessary, though I would think it's virtuous to do so if possible. However, of course sitting a respectable manner should be observed, and of course the place we're sitting in should not be a place where one would not recite the Qur'an (such as a dirty place full of garbage, bathroom, etc). I'm not sure if it is OK to listen to Qur'an recitation while laying down (such as when in bed). I used to do it and still do it rarely, but I don't know what is the actual ruling on it. I know people do it and it is considered OK as long as you are attentive and turn it off before you actually start falling asleep. If one is in the habit of putting on recitation of the Qur'an when they go to bed and then falling asleep while it is still playing, then that would probably be the wrong thing to do. Also, Allah tells us in the Qur'an that we should listen to the Qur'an with attention when it is being recited: "When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy." Quran 7:204 So we should make sure that if we are going to listen to Qur'an recitation, then listening to it is our primary focus at that point. We should not be eating, talking to people, or doing other work which takes away from our attention while Qur'an recitation is being played. The recitation of the Qur'an cannot be used as "background sound". I cannot put it on in my office and then just go about my daily work routine, or put it on at home while I'm doing cooking, cleaning, and all kinds of other work at the same time, etc. If Qur'an recitation is being played then I have to able to pay 100% attention to it and not be involved in talking and other tasks. As far as listening to it while walking etc as you ask, again I am not a scholar but Insha'Allah there is no harm in it. I listen to Qur'an through my earphones while walking sometimes, and very often while driving, Alhamdulillah. I actually find that it helps me guard my gaze even more if I am listening to Qur'an recitation while walking around on the street, because sure Insha'Allah I will not look at women etc while walking outside, but even if the thought crossed my mind, I would not dare look at someonething/someone I shouldn't be looking at if the Qur'an is playing in my ear, and I'm sure that applies to everyone Insha'Allah. So IMO that's also a good way to help guard your gaze. Same goes if one takes the train/bus and other forms of transportation regularly, I think these are good times to listen to some Qur'an recitation as we may or may not get time to do so at other times of the day. Again, the Qur'an recitation should be our focus when it is being played, so if a friend is walking with me, or if I have a passenger in the car with me, Qur'an recitation should not be played if we are going to be talking to each other as well. If we need to talk to each other, it should be turned off at a suitable point during the recitation (if you understand the meaning), and at the end of any ayat if you don't understand the meaning, so as to try our best not to just "cut it off". Also just found a relevant thread about this: http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/show...l=1#post198425 Insha'Allah the knowledgeable will correct me if I said anything wrong. May Allah forgive my mistakes. Ameen. Allah knows best. |
