Does this apply to Muawiya VS Ali(RA) or/and Yazid VS Hassan(RA)?
Mu'awiyah (ra) did not wage a war, he remained in al-Sham and did not agree to give 'Ali (ra) baya'ah until the killers of 'Uthman (ra) were dealt with, 'Ali (ra) wouldn't have this disobedience so just like he did in al-Jamal, he gathered an army and went to force Mu'awiyah (ra) to give the Baya'ah, he believed that the matter of Qasas was his responsibility as Caliph and no one can put conditions on him.

So both groups thought they were right, the reality is each group had a part of the truth but the one closer to the truth was 'Ali (ra), they both thought they were fighting for Islam.

later al-Hassan (ra) would make peace with Mu'awiyah (ra) and give him baya'ah and the entire matter ended.

As for Yazid vs Hussein (ra), basically al-Hussein (ra) and ibn al-Zubair (ra) completely refused Yazid's caliphate, not because they had anything personal against him, yazid and Hussein (ra) were cousins at the end of the day, but they refused the method of him coming to power, he was not worthy of it. Here the historians differ on whether Yazid had the intention of killing Hussein (ra) when he heard of his uprising, or whether he just sent the wrong man because of his in-experience (he was 33 I think), either way al-Hussein (ra) died as a result, yazid takes responsibility in both cases, Allah will deal with him in the way he deserves.

All of the above are the results of mistakes made by the Muslims, hopefully Muslims will learn from their mistakes and not dwell on the past.
