US MILITARY chiefs have launched an investigation into a video circulating on the internet claiming to show American Marines urinating on Taliban corpses.

The clip was viewed thousands of times and reposted on several websites since emerging online yesterday.

It appears to show four servicemen relieving themselves on the three blood-splattered bodies in Afghanistan as one makes a joke about giving them a "shower".

The men, who appear to be in military fatigues, stand over the bodies as they lie on the dusty ground.

The shocking video — which The Sun has decided not to show — is titled "US Marines peeing on dead Taliban".

According to the description posted with the clip, the men are from Scout Sniper Team 4 with the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines, based out of Camp Lejune Marine HQ in North Carolina.

The user who posted the video wrote: "I thought Marines were supposed to do the right thing when no one was watching."

The US Marine Corps were last night investigating the clip and pledged to take action if it was genuine.

Media officer Captain Kendra Hardesty said yesterday: "While we have not yet verified the origin or authenticity of this video, the actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps.

"This matter will be fully investigated and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions."

Last year the US military was hit by controversy as photos emerged of members of a rogue self-styled "kill team" posing next to corpses in Afghanistan.

The soldiers were accused of deliberately killing innocent civilians "for sport" and keeping parts of their bodies as souvenirs.

In November a US military court convicted Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs, 26, of murder, assault and conspiracy over the killings of three Afghans.

Three soldiers who had previously pleaded guilty in the case testified against Gibbs.
