Moragibah and stories of great men
Imam gazali in kymiah sadat explains that there are two kinds of relation that is dominant in ones spiritual life.
First type are people that are aware of Allah (they have consciousness). But they are not drawn in jala and magnanimity of subhana wa taala. Imam (RA) recommends moragibah especially for this kind of ibad(call it all of us). This kind of people have to take care of their hal (spiritual state) and conduct . At the end of day especially imam recomands that one review the passing hours . and separate the capital from profit and loss. Loss being the sins(maasiat) capital obligatory duties (wajibat )and profit is the nawafil
Second type are ibad that are drawned in the ocean of azamat (greatness) and jalal of Allah SWT.they are so mesmerized with Allah that dunya looks too small to be cause of any distraction in their consciousness.
Here are some examples of pious men and their moragibah. Though mostly their behavior seems strange in our times . It is that, we have estranged heavenly culture and become totally earthly
Rewayah 1
Junayd (RA) reported that ibn al karibi said one night I had wet dream (janabah) I had to do ghosl but it was a cold night and my nafs made me lazy. I missed my tahajud. I swore that I will do ghosl with cloth on and wore the wet cloth all day long until it dried on my body . I punished my nafs and it never was lazy to wake up for tahajud any more

One abid of banu-isreal was in his prayer place (mehrab) one woman approached to seduce him. He took one step toward woman but immediately made tawbah and asked for istighfar. For masyah (sin of) taking one steptoward the lady, he put his feet out of the prayer room until it froze and had to be cut.

Abu talha (RA) reported that one sahabi had taking his cloth off and was rolling on scortching pebbles in the heat of desert and was saying wow to you o’ soul that would not pray at night and be so lazy at day times. Prophet (SAS ) came by and asked the reason the man replied my nafs has overcome me. Prophet SAS said at this moment the doors of heaven has been opened for you and Allah SWT is taking pride on your action with angels. Then prophet SAS incstructed the ashab to go and ask the man for making dua for them. And he SAS asked the man to make dua for everyone.

Dawood taaei used to not eat dry bread and wet the bread well before eating. They asked him the reason he said chewing the bread waste time of about reading fifty ayah from quran kareem

Ahmad zarreen used to sit in prayer from fajr salat until dhohr salat and never look at anything. They asked why do you do that. He (RA ) said Allah swt made our eyes to only look at his handiwork and know his azammat(greatness)any one doing otherwise a sin will be written for him

Abutalha(RA) was in performing salat in his date palm farm. A beautiful bird appeared and distracted him. As a result, He had doubt in how many rukat he has prayed. He gave the whole farm in sadagah to prophet SAS for this negligence of nafs

Junayd said I never seen stranger than sagattie (RA). He lived 98 years no body saw him lying down or leaning at anything until he died

Abu Mohammad jariri stayed one year in Makah, he never talked , never slept, never leaned at anything and never stretched his legs. they asked him how could you do that he replied sincerity (sidg) of inside me give strength to outside of me

Syfyan thouri (RA)one night went to visit Rabiah(RA). He found her in her prayer place (mihrab). sofyan also started to pray in the corner of the house. She prayed non stop until sahar(dawn).he said Then I said asalam alaykum and asked her what should we make dua for. She said we make shukr for the twfig (being blessed for)of all night prayer and fasting for the coming day.
