Is performance of magic tricks (such as coin or card tricks) permissible in Islam?

Wa'alaikum salaam,

I think it's a waste of time. And it's not permissible to waste time in futile activities that serve no worldly or ukhraawi benefits.

Jazaakallah khair.

Maybe, but I used to do them to keep kids happy so I'm not entirely sure if it's a waste of time as such... but I just need to know whether they are permissible in general

Why wouldn't it be? Al aslu fil ashyaa' huwal ibaahah, and entertainment per se is not haram. Right?

I'm wondering because magic itself is haram so magic tricks is an imitation of a haram act and hence could potentially be impermissible

Wa'alaikum salaam,

PLEASE keep your kids happy by reciting to them stories of sahaabah, stories of courage, valour and sacrifice, and let them do some sports. (suitable for their age, of course) there is a world of useful things like jogging, swimming, wrestling etc. etc. to keep kids happy.

PLEASE don't waste their precious time in absolutely useless things like card games, board games, fairy tales. Children's minds are very tender, and even "small" things can make a lasting and permanent impression on their minds, unless Allah ta'aala guides them to the straight path.

Why I am saying this is because my own childhood was wasted in all those time-wasters, not to forget "ghost stories" which can do a great deal of damage to one's aqeedah and imaan as well.

May Allah ta'aala grant you goodly offspring who would be a great bounty for you in the akhirat, ameen.

I don't know about magic tricks, but might I suggest juggling for those who are looking for a new way to entertain their kids? It's not that hard to learn a few basic techniques with 3 balls, and kids love it. Easiest to learn with actual juggling balls, but once you do, you can juggle any old item. My 1 1/2 year old nephew loves it.

I dont know, you will have to ask the ulama fuqaha hazraat. I can make a pizza disappear before your eyes very quickly.

This is a fatwa from scholar Dr. Salah Al-Sawy. I will just quote the end, it is rather long:

It can be derived from this conclusion that one must not perform the tricks mentioned because, even if they are not the type of magic that makes one a disbeliever, they are a type of illegitimate activity due to their similarity to magic on the one hand, and because they leave an effect on the minds of the children related to fairy tales, witchcraft and other things forbidden in Shari`ah. Remember: whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better than it; and Allah Almighty is more exalted and more knowledgeable.
