The student loan is not necessary at all. SubhanAllah, in our day and age we look for short term solutions rather than long term. The loan maybe good for us in this dunya, but what about akhirah? The long term solution is to work hard, use the grant they give you, plan your finances. If you need to, look for jobs or provide some services for money. At a last resort ask a family or friend to lend you some money without interest. Al hamdu lillah it is so true in a way, if you want to do something the halal way, Allah will bidhnihi give you tawfeeq. We shouldn't deceive ourselves saying that we won't be paying the loan back because at the end of the day it is a loan and there has been an agreement that you will return the loan.

May Allah give us all tawfeeq. Ameen.

I'm in this situation at the moment too...and now I have made a conscious decision not to go to university. Besides the fitna which puts me off, like many others I don't have nine grand to spare, so financially I can't. But khayr Alhamdulillah, I have never been too keen on university.

With regards to open uni, I have a friend who did her degree for free because she was not earning and so they allowed her to do it for free. Apprentice (for brothers) seems to be a good idea too and in apprenticeships here in the UK, they send their employees to uni and pay for their tuition fees. So Alhamdulillah there are still options available.
