Default Regarding Walima and Nikah on same day

Just a quick question(s), on the day of Nikah, after the signing of the Nikah form can we hold a dinner banquet the same night so that over a 100 people can eat as an example (meaning can this be considered Walima)? Or does the Walima require that the wife and husband have to eat together and on another day?

Ps. Hanafi or Shafi fiqh preferable, though Maliki/Hanbali opinion is just fine.

Hanafi Answer:
In order for the Walimah to be valid, it must be held after the couple "consumate" the marriage. This would take place by them being in privacy for a few minutes.

The sunnah practice was that the walimah would be held the day after the marriage, however if one does have it on the same night- after the couple spend time together in privacy- it would be ok, especially as, nowadays having it the next day leads to a host of other expenses, the incurring of which is completely contrary to the spirit and sunnah of marriage.

soofi_saheb

I was reading up on this...

SunniPath: The Fiqh of Walimas

I wanted to get your opinion on this statement:

"Having said this, scholars mention that there is also scope in following the other opinions, thus if one had a Walima before consummation, it is hoped that one will gain the reward of Sunna."

The thing is my wife and I did our Nikah ceromony but held it in a banquet and fed around a hundred back home in Pakistan right after we signed the Nikah Nama. We did not consumate the marriage (as I had to get back to Canada and to sponsor her), though I have been alone with her a few times around eight months after the Nikah (it was not exactly a wedding night thing) and I am wondering if I would still have to do a Walima regardless or could other opinions be taken?

Due to the difference, one could hope for the reward of the sunnah, however the ideal would be that you hold a small walimah, in order to fulfil the sunnah.

As soon as she officially comes to stay with you, hold a small walimah, inviting a few friends.
There is absolutely no need for a huge function.
