THE MIRACLES OF HONEY
And thy Lord taught the Bee to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in (men's) habitations; Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth), and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for men: verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought. (Surah an-Nahl 68-69) Honey is one of the most amazing foods we enjoy today. Its exquisite texture, varying colours, and differentiating tastes make it truly a wonder of nature. In recent years, honey has been investigated for use in scientific medicine. However, scientists are baffled at certain properties of honey, and are at a loss to explain the undoubted benefits gained by human’s eating nature’s golden wonder. There are almost 200 ingredients which have been identified in honey. Basically, pure honey is a healthy, easily digestible, natural energy rich food. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. One tablespoon of honey provides 60 calories and contains 11g of carbohydrates, 1mg of calcium, 0.2mg of iron, 0.lmg of vitamin B and 1mg of vitamin C. The medicinal uses of honey have been documented in many civilizations for thousands of years. We not only see honey used in folk medicine, where honey is used in its pure form or in combination with herbs or other ingredients, but there are many ahadith which refer to honey as a Healer of disease Prophet Muhammed (SAW) is reported to have said “Honey is a remedy for every physical illness and the Qur’an is a remedy for all mental illness; therefore, I recommend to you both as remedies, the Qur’an and honey.” (Bukhari) Even though scientists and dieticians cannot explain why honey is such a remarkable food, they can acknowledge the benefits it can give. Here are a few examples of using honey for medicinal purposes in our every day lives. FOR INFANTS OVER ONE YEAR OLD: use honey as a sweetener to give the infant supplementary minerals and help calcium retention. SLEEP: To combat sleeplessness, stir one teaspoon of honey into a cup of camomile tea with your evening meal. DIETING: Use honey as a sweetener where ever possible, because it does not result in an increase in body fat as refined sugar does. If you are trying to lose weight, reduce your portion size and take one tablespoon of honey after a meal to give a feeling of fullness. COUGHS: To help sooth an irritating cough, mix one cup of boiling water with 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 lemon slices. Sip slowly to bring relief. DIARRHOEA: A sure cure for diarrhoea is to mix one tablespoon of honey with 200 mls of barley water. Drink half a glass when necessary. LAXATIVE: Honey has a natural and gentle laxative effect. Take one teaspoon of honey each morning to keep yourself regular. BURNS: Honey is an outstanding remedy for burns. Apply pure honey directly to open flame burns or steam burns and burns from hot objects. It alleviates the stinging and helps to stop the development of blisters. It will help to prevent infection and assist in swift healing. MOUTHWASH: Due to its antiseptic properties, honey makes an excellent mouthwash. Mix one tablespoon of honey with a cup of water and two tablespoons of cider vinegar. Honey is good for the memory, has antibacterial and antifungal properties and wound healing and anti inflammatory properties. Honey should be used in place of refined sugar with young children and the elderly as it is less strenuous on the digestive system. Honey digests easier then sugar because it has already been digested in part by the honey bee. This miraculous creature - the honey bee works endlessly to produce one of nature’s most prized resources for the consumption of us humans. As the ayah above states “Verily this is a sign for those who give thought” Allah (subhaana huwa ta'ala) has truly given us a blessing with His gift of honey. With all its properties, it is nothing short of miraculous |

Why is honey so sweet?
One day, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) was on his way to jihad with his Companinons and after choosing a spot , he said to them “Eat whatever you want to eat here” As they were about to commence eating, one of the Companions (radi Allah unhu) said:'' Ya RasullAllah! There is nothing else to eat with bread”. Then the Companion saw a honey bee zapping noisily nearby and asked the Prophet (Sallahoe Alaihie Wasallam) “Why is this honey bee making such a noise? The Prophet (Sallahoe Alaihie Wasallam) replied “This bee is saying that all its fellow bees are uneasy because the Companions haven’t got anything to eat with bread. Even though the bees have a honey comb nearby in the cave but cannot bring it to the Companions” The Prophet (Sallahoe Alaihie Wasallam) then stated “My beloved Ali (radi Allah unhu), follow this bee and bring the honey” Hence, Ali (radi Allah unhu) followed and returned with a bowl of honey which the Companions ate. As soon as they finished eating the bee returned again zapping about noisily. One of the Companions (radi Allah unhu) enquired “Ya RasulAllah! Why is the bee making noises again?” The Prophet (sallahoe alaihie wasallam) replied “I have asked this bee a question and it is merely answering it. I asked the honey bee about what its food is and its answer is that its food is the flowers in the hills and the forests”. The Prophet (Sallahoe Alaihie Wasallam) continued “I then asked the bee that flowers are also sour, bitter and unpleasant in taste. Then how come in your mouth (the bees mouth) they transform into a crystal clean and impeccably sweet honey?” The bee then replied, “Ya RasulAllah!(Sallahoe Alaihie Wasallam) Amongst our species, there lives a rich Queen. When we suck the juices of the flowers then our Queen sends her salah and darood sharif (blessings, salutations, honours and graces) to YOU (the Prophet(sallahoe alaihie wasallam)! And then all the other bees join in sending our darood to you hence all the sourness, bitterness and unpleasantness from the juices of flowers changes into a most sweet syrup and its because of the rewards from Allah of sending darood to you that this syrup transforms into the perfect honey (which besides death can cure any disease as Allah says in the Quran!)” If by reciting darood all the bitterness from the juices of flowers can change into a beautifully sweet syrup of honey, then by reciting darood our sins can also be transformed into hasanah (good deeds). Ameen. Narrated by: Maqasid Al-Salkain page number 53 |

Just read this article.. thought worthwhile to share.. Honey: A miracle drug By AFRA NAUSHAD, LIFE.STYLE@ARABNEWS.COM Published: Jan 4, 2012 00:17 Updated: Jan 4, 2012 11:08 You should use the two healing ones, honey and the Holy Qur’an; honey is a healing for the body just as the Holy Qur’an is a healing for the soul.” (Zad Al-Ma’ad Fi Huda Khayr Il-‘Ibad- volume III) The use of honey in the treatment of various ailments dates back to thousands of years. Allah the exalted said: “There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying color wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.”(Surah Al-Nahl, 16:69) The Qur’an indicates quite clearly that Allah has blessed honey with healing properties for the use of man. Honey is known to be composed of substances that are vital and beneficial to the human body. These include proteins, carbohydrates, vitamin B1, B2, vitamin H, copper, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, sulphur and chlorine. This article intends to discuss the benefit of honey consumption in the treatment of various ailments of the body system. A soothing balm for the stomach It has been narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim that a man came to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) whose brother was suffering from a bad case of diarrhea. The prophet repeats thrice the same advice of treating the patient with honey even when his condition did not seem to improve as stated by the patient’s brother. The messenger of Allah (PBUH) then said: ”Allah is telling the truth and your brother’s stomach is lying.” The man then gave his brother honey to drink again after which he recovered. This hadith demonstrates the conviction of the Prophet in the efficacy of honey for the treatment of the condition. Experiments have shown that fructose in honey encourages the absorption of water from the intestines without the absorption of sodium thereby aiding in recuperation from diarrhea. An experiment carried out by Dr.Sackett, a germ specialist and researcher at Colorado Agricultural College, has proved the effectiveness of honey in killing germs that cause typhoid fever and dysentery between 10 to 48 hours. Honey is the best form of food and medicine during GI tract infections and it also regulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid at normal levels, keeping stomach, duodenal ulcers and hyperacidity at bay. The sweetest antibiotic In 1958, Wenick found the presence of an enzyme in light honey that functions as an antibiotic. In 1960, Stenson and in 1963, Jonathan, both researchers, assumed that it was the hydrogen oxide or glycolic acid content of honey which was responsible for the germ-killing activity. Studies have proved that honey is a more powerful antibacterial agent than antibiotics (Mercan et al, 2007). Wounds and burns begone! Experiments have shown the rapid effect in the reduction of wound pains with the application of honey-cream packs. It is also useful in prevention of blisters that develop after burns. Beeswax mixed with olive oil has also proved beneficial in treatment of wounds and post-operative healing. Honey lowers the inflammatory markers in plasma like prostaglandins that make it a wonderful pain-killing ointment. Dr. Peter Molan, Professor of Bio-Chemistry at Walkato University, New Zealand who also heads the university’s Honey Research Unit has confirmed with experimental studies the effectiveness of controlling burn wounds with honey than silver sulfadiazine. It has also confirmed its strong antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties with complete healing without the need for skin grafts. Sniffs, colds and flues away A five-minute honey-water steaming has proven to be beneficial in relieving nasal congestion, throat pains and infections. Juice drops of a whole lemon mixed with a large tablespoon of glycerine and honey that is consumed for 5 days helps alleviate all kinds of cough especially in children. Honey with a milk and ginger infusion has long been used as an effective respiratory stimulant and expectorant in bronchitis and other respiratory infections. A study published in 2007 in the archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine by Dr. Ian Paul, a researcher at the Penn State College of Medicine, has confirmed that children who received honey before bedtime coughed less than those that received over-the-counter-drugs or nothing at all. Care and caution must be exercised in feeding honey to babies less than one year of age to prevent cases of botulism (a rare form of food poisoning). Honey eyes Honey ointments have proved beneficial in healing eye infections that include scotomas, general corneal infections, dryness of conjunctiva, inflammation of the eyes and viral infections of cornea (herpes). One of these studies was carried out at Al Mansoorah College of Medicine, Egypt, in conjunction with the Dept. of Biochemistry in an effort to isolate the enzymes present in honey that have been theorized to function as potent antimicrobial agents. Studies carried out by Rajan et al (2002) and Mc.Guire (1999) have published statistical results that indicate the reduced incidences of eye allergies by the regular consumption of honey. Sweet dreams, honey Due to the presence of reasonable amounts of sodium and potassium, honey has been indicated for use in the calming of nerves and to ward off anxiety and insomnia if a spoonful is consumed everyday before bed. Prof. N.K. Bogolepov and V.I. Kiseleva (1949) reported successful treatment of two recorded cases of patients suffering from disturbed sleep, headaches and irritability in a three-week treatment period. Bed-wetting woes Bed-wetting in young children that may be due to nervous, pathological or psychological issues can be controlled with a spoonful of honey before bed after emptying the bladder. The concentrated sugar content present in honey absorbs water from the child’s body and the vitamin B1 content is beneficial in cases of numbness and nerve paralysis. The underlying cause of the condition must be treated since further research is required to prove honey’s greater efficacy in treating nocturnal enuresis. A dose of honey for your heart Honey has also shown an indication in reducing the risk of heart disease. It lowers the C-reactive protein (an inflammatory marker of atherosclerosis) according to a study done by Waili in 2004.Consuming honey also has a low impact on lipid levels compared to glucose or sugar syrups. Remember that honey from different floral sources exhibit varying antimicrobial activity. Also keep in mind that some varieties of commercially processed honey may have lower antioxidant properties. To maintain honey at its optimum quality, check for favorable storage temperatures and opt for appropriate airtight containers. http://arabnews.com/lifestyle/food_h...icle558482.ece wa assalam.. |

THE MIRACLES OF HONEY However, in reference to what you mentioned above - I have a correction to make. "It does not result in an increase in body fat as refined sugar does." In fact, once you ingest sugar - be it refined, natural, or from honey ... our bodies do not know the difference. In fact, per tablespoon (unit volume) honey has more calories from sugar than refined sugar. Ask those who have to watch their sugar intake as if their lives depend on it, people with diabetes. So, if one were to ingest as many calories of honey as they did of refined sugar (or any other type of sugar), the effect on one's weight would be the same. The goal is to reduce the caloric intake, and increase one's calorie consumption. |

brothers, i found this.. http://www.wikihow.com/Verify-the-Purity-of-Honey Fake and impure honeys have become commonplace in the market today, despite many people's preference for 100% bees' honey. The problem with this is, unfortunately, fake and impure honey can be passed off as pure very easily. When viewed on the shelf, it is very hard to pick out what is pure, and what is not. There are, however, a few ways to figure this out. Steps1 Check the label. You would be amazed at how many people neglect to look closely at the label of food products before buying them, and then are dismayed to find they bought something they really didn't want. Check around the brand name, and the ingredients list (if there is one) for a mention of additives. The company should be required to list them if you are shopping in certain countries. If there are no mentions of additives, buy the honey. 2Taste the honey. If it seems off, and yet the label claims it is pure, there are a few simple tests you can run to check the purity of the honey. The dissolving test. Get a glass of water. And a tablespoon of honey are all you need for the first test.Empty the honey into the water. If the honey is impure, it will dissolve in the water- the most common additive to honey is syrup of jaggery, which dissolves. If it is pure, the honey will stick together and sink as a solid lump to the bottom of the glass. This test can also be completed by mixing equal parts honey and methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). Pure honey will settle to the bottom. Impure honey is more likely to remain dissolved and make the solution milky. The flame test. Get a lighter and a candle with a cotton wick. This test is better if you don't have as much honey to spare.Dip the cotton wick of the candle into a bit of the honey, and shake off the excess.Attempt to light the wick. If it burns, then it is completely pure honey. If it refuses to burn, then the presence of water is not allowing the wick to burn. (If there is only a very small amount of honey on the wick, though, it might still burn. It will produce a crackling sound, and it would be best to blow out the wick and try it again this time using more honey.) The absorption test. Pour a few drops of honey on blotting paper and observe whether or not it is absorbed. If it's absorbed, the honey's not pure.If you don't have blotting paper, pour a little bit of honey on a white cloth, then wash the cloth. If there is any stain left by the honey, it is probably not pure. Tips -If you're at a farmers market or buying from a local farmer, they may not allow you to do these tests before buying, simply because it's much less probable that a local supplier is tampering with their honey. If you feel you must test it, though, just ask, don't pull out a lighter and start attempting to burn their honey. -Crystallized, or granulated honey, is always pure. If you want to be completely sure that the honey you have bought is pure, that is the most reliable way. How to Reliquefy Granulated Honey is invaluable if you choose to buy crystallized honey. -Science has struggled for decades to develop a reliable scientifically-based test to identify adulterants and sugars added to honey. There does not currently exist a reliable in-home analysis that can be easily conducted to identify added sugars. If there were such an easy test, the prospect of adding sugars that are so easily identified would preclude any but the most ignorant from attempting such deceit. The only current reliable method is the AOAC Stable Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis. Warnings -You should always be careful when handling fire and hot wax. -Never feed honey to an infant - there may be spores of Botulism contaminating it (usually harmless to adults) which can severely harm the infant, resulting in death. wa assalam.. |
