Allowed for both. However, women shouldn't wear a heavy ittar before going outside the home.

There are different types though there are many that are uni-sex.

I remember reading about the topic in the book Ash-Shama'il al-Kubra - The Sublime conduct of Nabi (SAW), in which the following was mentioned:

"Preferable perfumes for men

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (RA) narrates that a person came to Nabi (SAW) requesting to pledge allegiance. Nabi (SAW) noticed yellow stains on his clothing and refused to accept his pledge saying, "Men's perfumes are those in which the fragrance is dominant and the colour is imperceptible, and women's perfumes are those which are dominant in colour, and indiscernible in fragrance." - Majma' Vol. 5, Page 161

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that Nabi (SAW) said, "The best perfumes for men are those in which the fragrance is dominant and the colour is imperceptible, and women's perfumes are those which are dominant in colour, and unperceivable in fragrance." - Tirmizi, Vol. 2, Page 107

Note: Men should not apply perfumes that would leave colourful stains on their clothing etc. nor should women apply perfumes that emit strong fragrances. Mulla 'Ali Qari (RA) has written that men should use perfumes such as Rose, Musk, 'Ambar, etc. Women, on the other hand, should use Saffron, Sandalwood etc. - Jam'ul Wasa'il, Page 5

Women are prohibited from applying perfume when venturing outdoors

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (RA) narrates that Nabi (SAW) said, "A woman who passes by a group of men after applying perfume is like a prostitute. - Tirmizi, Vol. 1, Page 107

Note: Since such a woman invites strange men to unlawfully derive pleasure from her, she is justifiably branded a prostitute. It is perfectly permissible for a woman to apply perfume within the confines of her home, - Jam'ul Wasa'il, Page 5 "
