Walaikum-a-Salaam. I was talking to a brother who reads this before every salah. I looked at Taleem-ul-had etc but could not find what the meaning is, why it is read or if it is supposed to be read. That is why i posted so someone knowledgeable can shed some light. W/Salam |

its a verse of quran. Surah Al An'am 79
“Inni wajjahtu waj-hiya lilla-zee fataras samawati wal ardha hannifan- wama ana minal mushriqeen” (I have turned my full attention towards the Supreme Being, Who has created the heavens and the earth, and I am not one of those who associate partners with Him). |

its a verse of quran. Surah Al An'am 79 Is it ok then for the brother to read this before each salah? Is it ok for him to think that saying this verse is part of the salah. I know quite a few people who have been born and raised in Bangladesh that do this but i was never taught this here in the UK (by maulana from Bangladesh). The brother in question is Hanafi. |

brother for the meaning. Actually in shafii madhab, we read it in the first rakaat before surah fatiha. Is your friend doing this understanding the meaning so that he can have better concentration in salaah? |

brother for the meaning. there are some short dua which prophet(sw) read before fatiha in (Mus vol.1, Misk vol 1 213,219) and these both were among them. Abu Hanifah and Shaybani rely on hadith of anas bin malik that the Prophet (saw) used to this and not add anything(darqutni). Abu yusuf says he should also say 'inni wajjahtu wajhi' to its end. This is from the hadith of ali (bayhaqi - although it is not regarded as strong) as long as i know. Abu yusuf may say that this for nawafil tahajud, so there can be some flexibility, and will not be regarded as fard. But somehow ahnaf read it when they stands on the musallah before starting prayer. but i personally not aware about the evidence. |

Never thought of what the origin could be. It'll be great if someone could post the evidence.
I can add that some people following the Shafii madhab, in addition to the "Inni waj jahtu wazihiya ......." also read at the end of it following sentence: Inna salaati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbil aalameen. Laa shareeka lahu wabi dhaalika wa umirthu wa ana minal muslimeen. |

The Opening Supplication (Istiftah):
"I turn my face to Him who created the heavens and earth, a pure monotheist, in submission, and am not of those who associate others with Him. My prayer, worship, life, and death are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds, who has no partner. Thus I have been commanded, and I am of those who submit." |
