It is a sign of Islam yes, so If you see it's picture you would combine it with Islam.

To keep unity and uniform in prayer - thats all non Muslim needs to know.

For us we have its sacredness in mind and heart and above all it is the place where the first tajalli occured and it is of a circular shape thus we have the saying "the circle of life" - life itself has this circular shape.
