Default Video games: strange stories and symbols (need advice)
Aslamwalikum

I wanted to ask those of you, *who may provide some honest opinions regarding playing video games.

For years I have enjoyed throwing in a good video game and enjoying some good gameplay. As consoles
and computers advanced so did the graphics / sounds and most importantly "story lines" in these games.

I started noticing in the last few years many distinct traits in certain games, *the story lines changed into
very dark and haram tones (some of the descriptions of shaitan and jinn in certain games are mind blowing).

Now let's fast forward to the present with a video game titled "uncharted 3" for the ps3, *I began playing this game with a smile on my face. *However it quickly changed, *the signs and puzzles within this game are almost as if one is committing *"shirk."

An example is that of a puzzle that needs to be solved by the gamer by linking pagan symbols, *once the
puzzle is solved the game makes no mention of what all the symbols lined up represent. *I was able to get more information on the symbols and the meaning and I was shocked to learn how haram these symbols lined up actually are (the meaning is so haram I don't want to state it, *it's basically calling out in order the most evil and so on).

I continued playing and abruptly stopped, *this time it hit close to home. In a part in the video game you load up an image of various symbols. Think of hieroglyphics, *I called my wife down and asked her "why do these look familiar." My wife being Jamaican and Haitian asked me why I was looking at those "horrible" symbols. These symbols are commonly used by old witch doctors in Haiti. *

Here is the question:

Can playing and seeing these obviously dark symbols, *create a haram atmosphere ? *

Further can one loose Imaan if again playing and solving puzzles that give praise to evil in there ancient languages. *

let me know what you think, *I did not feel right after my wife made it clear she had seen the symbols back home ( very dark meanings )

Salam

I don`t think you should engage yourself in these shirkyya games. I don`t know what ruling is about playing games, but there is lot of general War-games and lot of different games you may play.

I am afraid if anyone solve DELIBERATELY any kuffriyah shirkyya equation, then he becomes kafir

Salam Aleykum,

The programmers and designers put this sort of thing because it looks cool, from what I remember uncharted is a game where you explore ancient civilisations and caves and things of this nature, so I doubt playing it can be equated to shirk.

Jazakallah for the insight.

Tri: my main concern is this, the symbols that represent callinng upon evil and such have a particular order and sequence. Example, as hexagram two moons and sun mean nothing next to each other. However the game makes you place it in
Sequence that is exactly how someone who studies black arts would do (for haram shaitanic reasons)

Now even though it is a digital replica of the symbols, the game is physically making the user put them in the order to
Praise and call upon an actual evil.

I think I may just get rid of the game,

Allah knows best

yes, they can create a haram atmosphere. these games often have haram content (sexual) and always have music. also they are a waste of time and take you away from the remembrance of Allah. I know people who play these games for hours on end. why not put that time into your studies or your career instead?

I think that if you feel negativity and a sense of haram then of course stop playing. I for one enjoyed playing the game - it is rare in video games for them to explore past civilisations mentioned in the Quran and Old testament as the game reference are the people of 'Ad.

The game also explores secret societies and their lineage - to an extent, it shows what is happening today and the notion that power corrupts - even if it is in an entertainment form. I'd rather play a game like this than Battlefield 3 which is essentially mass brain washing for an Iranian occupation.

We are being bombarded by symbolism with esoteric, subliminal and down right evil hidden messages everyday. Research and you'll see that what I'm talking about.

Now Skyrim - the amount of paganism in that is astounding, I've stopped playing it.

May Allah (swt) protect us all from evil.

Skyrim is a game based on fantasy and magic so it makes sense that there are pagan references in it. RPGs such as Elder Scrolls, Dark/Demon's Souls etc are supposed to have such things in the game as it compliments the style and setting of the game. I personally don't see any wrong with it.

Whatever fits your boat though.

Totally valid point - it is wholly based in a fantasy D&D setting, so to be expected.
