A Kindle, so they can carry a whole library in one slim package. Or an Acer A500 tablet for the same purpose.

You would need to have a lot of bread (money) for that.

Brother Muhammed Shuaib,
I do not understand your query about book as a gift. Do you mean that a good gift must be a consumable?

Just as Hazrat Hakeem ul Ummah رحمه الله has mentioned repeatedly in his books, the best is to ask the Alim what he wants. You might gift him a thing he doesn't need.gift. The best gift would be that you give him cash so that he can buy anything he wants.

Gifts are always given according to the giver's status not the receiver's.

You'll give the gift according to your status. Just ask him what he wants. If you cannot afford him, give him the amount you can afford.

The purpose of the gift is to make the other person happy. He will be the happiest when he gets what he wants.

Oh yes! A good pen! Splendid!

A pen that is comfortable to hold, and writes smoothly, and can take a beating. A mid-range rollerball pen, like one of those clickable Parkers. And include a pack of refills.

And to boot you do not have to look around for an 'alim you can divert the Parkers to this direction too. (No eParkers please!)

Although this is a good advice but,
Wont that make the receiver hesitate a little, as he might not know how much the giver can afford.
Maybe we should keep a good buffer amount.

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

I was reminded of something written in the malfoozaath of Moulana Ilyas (رحمه الله) though it is slightly off topic.
It is that the ulema just like ordinary folk, have their worldly affairs to attend to. If we can take a little time to help the ulema-e-ikram in their day to day needs such as doing the marketing, paying the water and electricity bill this will give them more time to do the work of deen. (Please Note that the emphasis here is more on giving OUR TIME rather than spending for them, of course if one is able to spend one's money on the ulema that is praiseworthy by itself)

مع السلام
Assalaamoalaykum-w-w
Treat your Aaalim Friend or Shaykh (inc. his family) to a holiday trip somewhere nice! InshaAllah it will be good and appreciated! They cant afford it the poor souls.!

Give anything within your means. Most importantly, give it with sincerity (Iklaas) and not for show. Even if you give one date sincerely is better than giving the hold world and whatever it contains for show.

We are going to gift mobile phone to our ustaad-e-mohtaram. He is in need of it very much. He is very poor plus some days back his daughter was admitted to the hospital and 2-3 days back his son was admitted. His salary is also very less, with this he is spending so much on his children for their recovery. Please pray for his children.
