Default Purpose of Zakat!

The purpose of Zakah is to help poor people in need.

It's not to build Masjids by doing Halala of the Zakat.

Yes, zakah is being eaten by those who are not eligible for it. It is a massive problem. Something seriously needs to be done about this chanda system.

As-Salamu ´alaykum,

Yes, we have enough masajid, let us try to fill them before building more.
Another forgotten Sunnah is to feed the poor people in our local communities, not to repeatedly send all the money abroad.

wassalam

was told many years ago by a guy in karachi that the local madaris collect the zakat and only give it to those gareeb students who agree to give most of it back to the madrasa. is this true?

They don't give it to the students. Mostly they have a clause in the admission form which makes the Nazim sahib entitled to take and use zakat on his behalf.

They never give it to the students like that.
