I got this in the email today from al-Maghrib Institute

THURSDAY, ... OCT. 2011 Shaykh Abdulbary Yahya

Night Lecture with College of Foundation and General Studies, UNITEN
Topic: “Rock stars: Young People Around the Messenger.”
Location: Dewan Kuliah 1, ..... [Google Maps]
Time: 8:00pm – 9:30pm

What I wanted to ask is it halaal to say this? I don't feel it is right, but how can these Ulama do this?

....heard in some sipah sahaba bayan that the sahaba are like mirrors for us, you will be whatever you call them...if someone calls them kafir nauzubillah he will himself be kafir, if someone says they are munafiq nauzubillah he will himself be munafiq, if someone says May Allah be pleased with them then Allah will be pleased with him on this count....

Anyone calling the sahaba as rockstars is a rockstar himself as you can see these hip, flashy, glamourous scholars and institutes creeping up everywhere...

They're trying to use lingo that I assume they think would appeal to the current youth. "Rockstars" is a term people have hijacked into meaning a "superstar", "perfect" etc.

The intention isn't to disrespect (of course) but it's not really a good choice of words at all given the obvious connotation despite it being a metaphor.
