Default Signs of Ahl Sunnah Wal Jama'e
Who Are The Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat? (Answered By Mufti Saiful Islam)

Q: Who are the real Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat? Nowadays every sect is claiming to be Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat. What does the Ahaadeeth say regarding this matter? How will I know that I am in the right group? Please explain in detail?

A: Ahlus-Sunnah Wal–Jamaat (the follwers of the Sunnah and the group of Sahabah (RAD) are Ahle-Haq (the truthful and the authentic people) and the ones who confirm to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAAW) and the guided Sahabah (RAD). This has been explicitly mentioned in one Hadeeth. “My Ummah (Nation) will be divided into 73 sects. Every sect will be in the fire of Hell except one.”
The Sahabah (RAD) asked, “O, Rasulullah (SAAW) which is that sect.”
The Holy Prophet (SAAW) replied: “That sect which follows the path on which I and my Companions are.”
Tirmizi (Vol 2, Pg 89)

The sentence “Every sect will be in the Fire of Hell except one” means that they will be thrown into Hell on account of there evil beliefs and then, those beliefs that did not transgress to kufr (disbelief) will, after serving the punishment, come out of Hell and enter into Jannah (Paradise).

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Umar (RAD) in a long Hadeeth mentions 10 signs of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat. He says, “Anyone who has in him the following 10 signs, he is of the Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat.

1. He performs the 5 times daily Salaah with the Jamaat (congregation)
2. He does not speak ill of any of the Sahabah (RAD)
3. He does not draw his sword against a Muslim ruler
4. He does not doubt in his own Imaan (Belief) and he calls himself a true believer and a Muslim
5. He has belief in fate, good and bad, that everything is from Allah (SWT)
6. He does not dispute about the religion of Allah (SWT) (i.e. he does not argue without proof)
7. He does not accuse anyone of disbelief (kufr) on account of sin.
8. He does not omit the funeral prayer of anyone who is a Muslim
9. He accepts the permissibility of wiping over the leather socks whilst on a journey and at home
10. He considers it proper to perform Salaah behind an Imaam, pious or sinful. (Bahrur-Raaiq)

Hence those people who conform to the 10 signs will be classified as Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat. May Allah (SWT) bestow the correct guidance and understanding upon everyone. May He make us all true Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat.
