![]() ![]() This is not a scholarly reply but just my personal opinion. I started thinking about this same thing after I was about to go back to the gym again after taking Ramadan off. I personally do not see why a brother could not use the gym... the same rules apply as anywhere else. As long as your lower your gaze, your intentions are pure, you go there and do your workout, and make sure the parts of your awrah which are supposed to be covered are covered properly... I don't see why we shouldn't go to the gym to exercise. Now, if someone goes to the gym for the wrong reasons, such as to check out girls, then that is on them & Allah knows what's in our hearts. If we can't go to the gym because men and women mix freely there, that means we pretty much cannot go anywhere in the Western world except for our home & the masajid, as men & women mix freely at 99% of the places. Again, this is my personal opinion only, not scholarly advice... we will wait for a brother/sister of knowledge to address this issue. Allah knows best. ![]() |

I'm no scholar either but just some recommendations I have
1) Firstly I would suggest to try and find a suitable gym where there is no mixing 2) If non are available, try to make sure that the gym you go to is at the least male dominated, which shouldn't be difficult. 3) avoid gyms which tend to have a lot of dance classes (franchised gyms) and such as they are more female focused and the dress code is usually very liberal. This might make it challenging to lower your gaze. 4) check your intentions 5) weigh the benefits/consequences 6) pray istikhara before deciding and Allah know best |

![]() This is faulty logic. When you go to a mixed gym, you're putting yourself in an unnecessary situation. You do not need to go to a gym, whereas one needs to go to work or to go to school to get an education. In the latter situations, one still needs to lower the gaze and act with discretion. In Islam, many laws exist regardless of intention. If one's intention is not to engage in fornication with women, why could one not be amongst women and have girlfriends? This is because intentions are flimsy things. The best way to avoid mixing would be to find a gym that is not mixed or to find one where women are not frequent. Or find times when the gym is not busy and there are no women around. In the end, if there are women who will be present in the gym, then the gym should be completely avoided. |
