Music is haram, no questions about that.
Proofs 1) Surah Luqman, verse 6: "And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allâh, or the Verses of the Qur'ân) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire)." Abdullah ibn Masoud when asked about the word lahw [in Arabic] in this verse, he replied: I swear by the One who their is no deity besides it means singing. He repeated it thrice. Surah Al-Isra', verse 64: "And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allâh's disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry, share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways - usury or by committing illegal sexual intercourse), and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but deceit" The voice here means music, singing, etc. 2) Hadith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will come a time when people of my nation will make halal: fornication, wearing of silk, wine and instruments." Classified as Sahih, Ibn Mahjah. 3) Salaf. Ahmad ibn Hanbal used to say: Music cultivates hypocrisy in the heart akin to how water grows a plant. Imam Malik said: It is the fasiq who does this act. Abu Bakr Al Sideeq: Singing and music are the instruments of the Devil. Followers of Abu Haneefa: Listening to music is fisq and enjoying it is kufr. Al-Qurtubi: Music is unlawful by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Fadil ibn Ayad: Music is an entryway to fornication. Yazid ibn Walid: Music decreases haya [shyness], increases lust and destroys magnanimity. Hence one can see the clear evidence of it's unlawfulness. You will never find someone close to Allah and yet listens to music; because music itself prevents one from the remembrance of Allah. |

I'm noticing a trend these days of "enriching" an otherwise mediocre nashid by using loads of instruments and even women singers. The effect just puts me off.
I find myself wishing for well-written nashid with just a few instruments. That Burda is a good example, and also "Ya Allah" from the Laya Project (although my friends wonder why I'm listening to a Telegu nashid). |

Dhikr seems to be a new trend. Lotsa pakistanis and turks been doing these sufistic things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3_20...34A97E&lf=plpp
Some people use an argument that the prophet (saw) allowed music at eid. |

Yes it's amazing how one can be expressing love for Sayyiduna Muhammad, sallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam, while dressing up in a manner contrary to him, even going to the extent of using instruments. I remember coming across a "nasheed" once where the brothers were talking about sunnah, yet they were dancing and mocking those who don't follow it, subhanAllah. I used to listen to English nasheeds, at a point they were pure. Now I hardly do because some of them have gone off the limits in terms instrument use and sometimes they are just another form of pop music. 'Arabic nasheeds are good sometimes, but now slowly you start to hear excessive vocalisation- the best nasheeds, in my opinion,I must say are the urdu ones of munshideen like Hafiz Abu Bakr and the like- no instruments just pure expression of ones inner love inshaa Allah.
Anyways that's just my opinion, of course there are halal nasheeds in all languages but the above is my observation. May Allah give us all hidayah. Ameen. |
