![]() I spent about 3 to 4 weeks in Cairo and got a pretty good feel on Islam in Egypt--not great of course, but certainly not bad. At least to me it seemed as if people are quite pious in the region. Unlike Turks, Egyptians will get ecstatic upon learning that you're a Muslim. Just about every single woman I saw wore the hijab, and it seemed as if the tight clothing styles were prevalent primarily amongst the more wealthier people. The hotel I stayed at was in a pretty low income area and most of the people there seemed to be in touch with Allah ![]() ![]() Overall, I had a very good feel for Islam in Egypt. Amongst the wealthy elite it may not be too prevalent (even though they try to appear as if it is), the common people seem very much to love Islam. There are tons and tons of television stations airing the Qur'an, Islamic lectures, and similar stuff. Shops frequently will have the Qur'an on tv or the radio. A good place to be--except for the air pollution. My God, the air pollution in Cairo was horrible. |

A good place to be--except for the air pollution. My God, the air pollution in Cairo was horrible. I was 6 months in Cairo and I can only agree with you; but also with the rest of your message who give a good picture of Cairo; it is a shame to qualify a nearly whole country "protitutes". It is a good place also to learn Arabic for less money with qualified teachers. Wa salam |

![]() I have to disagree with ibn Mikaeel, I've stayed in egypt for more than 2 months, and I did not get a good islamic atmosphere in Cairo. Most of the younger generation do not really pray. Boyfriend/girlfirend relationships are far too common, openly in public (there is no shame in it any more for them). The vast majority of the women who wear hijab wear colourful skin tight and attractive clothing and heavy makeup, defying the very nature of hijab. western style TV, Music, intrernet is the norm. Alchol is drunk mainly underground (still shame in drinking alchol). There is defnitly a mental slavery to the west trend. Western ideals and fashions are being adopted en masse, younger generation seemst to be crazy over soccer, western fashion etc. This is the majority of the 20 something generation I'm talking about. Egypt is excellent to learn arabic and tajweed, and that's it. There is nothing else worth going to egypt for. The people are generally better natured than most in the west. Cairo is also overcrowded and polluted. Egypt is no differnet from any other Islamic country, where you get a few good Muslims, where the vast majoity of the people are much better mannered and natured than the people in the west, but at the same time are mentally enslaved by the west, look up to the west for guidance and are going further and further away from Islam. Note, this is only in cairo, the smaller towns and villages are most likely differnet. ON top of that the goverment is tyrannical. The people growing beards and going to masjid do so at risk of getting arrested. People are dissapearing all the time. Most of the peopl who pray 5 times a day do not have beards becasue of the goverment. Bribery is all too common when it comes to authorities, just like in pakistan. If you were to be seen wearing jubba, imammat with a beard regularly going to masjid, get ready to be picked up by police. There is also a massive influx of modernist/salafist thought, messing up the principles of following fiqh in egypt. I would choose Pakistan anyday over egypt. |
