true. i had a bird and i potty-trained her, i never ever kept her in a cage - but because she used to play all over the house and yard i used to have her wings clipped at first (just a few feathers from 1 wing) but once she got used to her surroundings she used to fly and come back home to me every-day... birds are exceptionally intelligent creatures and once you win they love and trust they'll almost never leave you, actually my bird, who could fly and run outside whenever she wanted to used to prefer clinging to me, and travelling, eating, sleeping and being all the time with me! i know what sister reeha means when she says the saddest part of having a pet is losing it, coz when my bird (who was more like my baby than pet) died i was DEVASTATED... i think i'll never ever forget her and stop missing her even if a live to a million years.
Wow what kind of a bird was it? I only know of one kind that sticks to its user and never escapes (in my case it escaped...must be my deodorant), so am curious what kind is it.

Isn't there a hadith where the Messenger consoles a young boy whose bird dies? And the permissibility of keeping birds is derived from this hadith? In which case, how can it be 'cruel' to keep a bird locked up in a cage if it is permissible? (I'm assuming the Sahaba had kept the bird in a cage)

Any idea who derived that permissibility? Maybe that bird was already sick and couldn't fly, hence needed some care..

Don't mix the male with the female cuz then he'd stop singing, don't even let them see each-other, unless for mating.
They don't really sing though do they, is it not tasbeeh? I understand what you mean though.

I know a few brothers who have dogs but keep them in kennels in the back garden and never allow them into the house. One friend has a Japanese Akita, he's so beautiful, a real hunting dog!

hunting dog? Akitas are pure fighting dogs. They are nice looking dogs though, and I heard the Japanese breed them so that they don't slobber nearly as much as other dogs.

I agree with you. I don't understand how people can cage birds, and fishes, and actually enjoy it. It sounds very depressing. I would never get a bird and cage it just so I could her it sing or talk. may Allah help these poor helpless beings.

Come now, you're making all us bird lovers seem like heartless callous people here! my birds are happy, cheeky and love to sing.. especially budgies, they bob their heads all day long

It's nice hearing a bird sing, keeps company for one who is alone most of the day

lol, it she was a cockatiel. actually we let all our domesticated birds fly away and they all remain in the area for years - you'll find cockatiels, ring-necks, budgies and all types of birds free in the yard!

i think the secret is NO deodorants. haha

Since theres no other thread to post on, I think ill post here.

Past the stage of keeping pets now. Used to have millions of pets. I love rabbits. Cats are the best because they understand you. Dogs are the worst cause they are Haram. Turtles are also nice. Fish are good for decoration only.

Insha'Allah will bring a few rabbits when Mini-Taliban is a little older.

Question
Asalam o alaikum, My question to you Is that is it permissible for muslims to keep certain animals such as fish at home? Could you please provide me with any hadiths of our prophet (p.b.u.h) or any ayat from the Qur'an if it is permissible or prohibited to keep animals at home provided that we take great care of them and respect them.Jazaq Allah.

Answer

It is permissible to keep pets, regardless of whether they are birds, fish, reptiles or any other animal except pigs and dogs. It will not be permissible to keep an animal which may cause harm neither is it permissible to cause any harm to an animal.

A hadith in Sahih Bukhari (Vol.2 Pg.905 and 915-Qadeemi) mentions that a young Sahabi by the name of Abu Umair had a small bird as the pet, with the knowledge of Nabi (sallalahu Alaihi wasallam). Another hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari in Adabul Mufrad (Pg.139) mentions that the Sahabah (Radhiallahu Anhum) were in the habit of keeping birds in cages.

Thus our Fuqaha have ruled that keeping pets is permissible as long as they are treated kindly and fed properly. (Majmoo' Fatawa Vol.2 Pg.201, Raddul Muhtaar Vol.6 Pg.401, Fatawa Qari'ul Hidayah)

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Dear Shaikh,

Question: Is it allowed to keep a bird who disturbs you in Salah by singing constantly?

Question: Is it true that Rasool Allah praised the Rooster because it wakes you up for Fajr and keeps Jinns away? I remember reading it in hadith.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said:
'When you hear a rooster crowing, then ask Allah for His bounties, for it has seen an angel, and
when you hear a donkey braying, then seek refuge in Allah from Shaitan, for it has seen a Shaitan'
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Sahih al-Jami #611]

It wouldve been better to come here, Buy a bird, keep it with you on the whole trip. Make it ba-barkat by taking it to Makkah. Then take it back.

Madni Bird..

But.. How sad it would feel going away from Madinah.

Sister, no offense sister but I am an animal lover too. All I am saying is how can one be an animal lover and at the same time love to see animals in confinement is beyond me. May Allah swt help me see the wisdom in this, especially since it seems like it's permissible. Allahu alam.
