Salalmu Alaykum sisters/brothers
I am still earning about Islam so much and as much as im seeing that it is extremely peaceful and how devoted we are to Allah SWT and we all try to avoid Haram things and definitely avoid Shirk, may i know why drawing people is haram in islam? I mean ive read some hadiths saying that if i draw images, i will be asked at Yawm l Qyama to breathe life into because im challenging Allah. First off, i never, even, not ONCE ever tried to compete with Allah swt, he the greatest and is capable of doing anything, a mere human is no match for him. I've spent my entire teenhood drawing and trying to improve my artistic gift. I thought this was a miracle from Allah swt to have such great artistic talent and i thought Allah swt wanted me to taking advantage of a talent many people arent born with. When i draw, i only draw to improve my abilities, and just for fun. i never ever wanted it to blasphemous. Drawing still doesnt come between me fasting or performing the 5 salahs, for they come first. So what can i do? I do not want to make Allah upset with me, and i have asked for his forgivness many many times but drawing has become a hobby to me and idont know what to do Jazakum Allah khairan |

Walaikum Assalaam brother,
SubhanAllah it's great to see your concern about harm and halal, and you taking the effort to clear this doubt. may Allah guide us all on the straight path. Alahmdulillah, I have been blessed with this beautiful talent too. I used to sketch faces amd make portraits, and I was very good at making human figures and emotions. When I learnt about hadith that you made a mention of I completely stopped drawing animate pictures. I discarded all my drawings and sketches, believe me it was extremely hard, but nothing comes above the love of Allah swt. I don't have a scholarly reply, I am sure one of the other learned members will reply, but I will say one thing. The talent that Allah has given you and me and many others like us is a test from Allah swt. So the best approach in my humble opinion would be to stay away from what is forbidden. Even if your intentions are clear the act itself is forbidden. I am not saying you have to give up your hobby, you can still draw and paint inanimate pictures. I make abstract paintings and designs now which give me much more satisfaction, or do islamic calligraphy (which also is very interesting, maybe you should try that). Actually there are many things you can do with your talent. I believe making flowers, mountains etc is allowed but I maybe wrong, flowers don't interest me hence I never bothered May Allah swt help us increase our imaan and make us among the righteous, ameen. |

Brothers and Sisters, salam i have very good news for you
Today after the Salah ul Jumua, i had a small chat with our Mosque's Imam about this subject and this is exactly how the conversation happened ( but in arabic): Me: Salamu Alaykum shaikhna Sheikh Ahmad: Wa alaykum l salam wa ra7matu Allah wa Barakatuhu Me: Sheikh, i would like to ask you some concerning questions about Islam Sheikh: Go ahead, brother Me: Is it true that in Islam drawing people and animals is haram? Sheikh: What? nono, you can draw what ever you want Me: But there is this hadith that says all image makers will be in hell Sheikh: Bassam, when the Prophet (pbuh) address the "image makers", he was reffering to drawing pictures to worship, for example how Christians have drawings and images of Jesus and Mary (pbut), so as long as you dont use the images for worship, then you can draw whatever you like, but be warned my son, refrain from making statues and sculptures, for that is a grave sin Me: Thank you Sheikh, taqabala Allah |

Brothers and Sisters, salam i have very good news for you The thing is, the Hadith itself is not clear, at least to me for the moment, basically it says that those who draw images of beings as if thinking that they created them, then Allah on the day of judgement will challenge them to breathe life into these "creations" and they won't be able to do it... But to me that does not sound like errr, a punishment, just like Allah will challenge the rulers by saying "Where are the Kings on this Day!?" doesn't mean that being a ruler is Haram...i dunno. btw who is this sheikh that you asked? where did he study and so on? I mean maybe he's not fully qualified? |

@TripolySunni
Brother Salamu Alayka. About the Shia, they dont authenticate the Sahih Muslim (where Hadiths about this subject is found) so they dont care, lets just discuss the Sunni side. Everyone almost has his own idea about the two hadiths, my opinion is that Allah SWT is testing me to see if I think that the drawings are from my creation and imagination where in fact Allah has made me do them so Allah has made these drawings, he wants to test me to see if i will thank him or thank my artistic touch, thanking my artistic touch is the kufric side of it. Of course thats how i think. Now about my local Mosque's Imam, honestly its the first time i ever talked to him and my friend only told me his name's Ahmad. Now i can tell he is very educated and gives out accurate and authentic quranic and hadithic references. He always gives out a sermon friday, every single week, not a different Sheikh and whats better is that he is the Imam of the mosque. And his sermons are always touching and so accurate and gives out a lesson, i sometimes cry :P honestly, no offense to all my fellow Muslims brothers and sisters online, i'd rather trust an Imam saying that drawing people is halal insted of non-imam brothers and sisters on the internet telling me its haram. Again, i mean no offense. Jazaka Allah khairan |
