Default Opening a facebook page for Islamic Center
Asalam Alykum WrWb

I work in a governmental islamic center in my country, its the only one ! I am a last year university student.

Through the permission of the higher authorities, I wanted to open a facebook page for the center. I have been thinking for months now. Id like ideas and opinion.

I want to open it for following reasons:

1. The reverts have no place to re-connect back to us, some are tourists and go back to their countries. I want them to have some place where they can get counselled, ask questions and get a quick feedback, that is through facebook.

2. I want the youngsters to visit us, they can only do that if we can appraoch them, and the best way to do is through facebook. Websites are of no use unless you accidentally bump into them.

3. We plan a lot of lectures and seminars where we call international speakers, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Raheem Green and many many others have come to give a 3 day workshop or seminars. So facebook page would be perfect to announce this "especially" to the youth. Older community comes anyway.

4. I just want to service the deen more whatever way I can.

The things that hold me back are the following:

1. My Shaykh himself doesnot allow social networking and is against it.

2. many scholars forbid "facebook" because of the cartoons that were created on it

3. There is no gender segregation, brothers and sisters might add each other, this page may be a place to increase fitna. Brothers of marriageable age might have the intention to add sisters for marriage but could be worse than better

What are you opinions?

JazakAllah khair

Salam

There are many Islamic pages and groups on Facebook. I don't see Any problems with that and I don't think it will encourage fitna. It's the intention that counts.

Go ahead I'll be definitely the first to join the group inshaAllah lol

I won't 'advise' you what the right thing to do is. I will say, a 'few months' is a long time. If you decide not to make a facebook page, let the 'islamic centre' know. They may give the task to someone else who is willing to do so. Furthermore, Facebook pages are very simple to make. All those things you suggest are easily possible on facebook and undoubtedly possibilities one has not considered.

JazakAllah khair sister somali_lioness

Brother, I am more than willing and I want a facebook page because of its simplicity. Now whats holding me back is, I look down upon facebook, I have always seen it as a useless tool and for those people who have abundunt time on their hand. But after the failure of the website of our islamic center, the only solution i have is an interactive media which has daily updates and gets right into your inbox. The daily doses and all those notifications make you go and visit the page anyway.

So I cant decide to use this filth for an islamic purpose, yet I want to catch the youth out there and many more people esp reverts. so they could stay in touch with us.

I am kind of confused whether to open it or not.

What do scholars recommend?

Is it more of a benefit than fitna?
