Default To invite or not to invite ?
salaam 3alaykum

I am in a bit of a delima, a family member is due to marry in the coming months and we are deciding who to invite. We have some relatives who we would have invited but our relations with them have deteriorated. Its primarily due to money/land and responsibility issues, things are REALLY bitter. We have tried to mend ways but they are being quite stubborn. There is generally alot of negativity and animosity between the two families and hurtful things have been said, lies have been spread etc. They aren't very practising and side more with cultural principals.

Now the question is, would it be a good idea to invite them ? The wedding it meant to be a joyous ocassion but I fear if they do come it will just introduce negativity into the atmosphere and could potentionally lead to other problems.

if you choose to invite them, you will be acting on the hadith "silut ur rahm" - keep the ties of kinship (ie keep good relations with your relatives). Ulema iterpret silatur rahm to mean not only keeping ties with those who keep ties with you, but rather, to remain connected even with those who choose to cut you off.

Who knows, if you invite them, it might even diffuse some of the tension between you.

the final decision, though, is up to you.

Allah swt. doesn't like khata rahmi(cutting relations) with relatives.

so my suggestion: invite them.
